In the first game, Rosie Bartletti delivered a standout performance, pitching a complete game shutout. She allowed just one hit and struck out four batters, maintaining a perfect game into the seventh inning. Bartletti also contributed offensively with two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs. The Prairie Stars got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Bartletti singled, advanced to second on a steal, moved to third on a sacrifice by Rebecca Neupauer, and scored on a sacrifice from Bailey Masching, ending the inning at 1-0.
The fifth inning was pivotal for UIS as they extended its lead to 3-0. Chloe Scroggins singled, followed by a walk to Sophie Rivera, before Bartletti tripled to right field, driving in both runners. The game concluded with UIS maintaining its defensive composure to keep Lewis scoreless throughout.
“Rosie Bartletti was fantastic leading us off both in the circle and at the plate,” said head coach Shannon Guthrie. “Scoring in the first inning was huge, and then watching her go six perfect innings was a lot of fun. We had more seniors step up as Chloe led off the fifth inning with a hit, Sophie got on with two outs, and Rosie had a huge triple to score two more. The defense made great plays both in the outfield and infield and held them to just one hit.”
In the second game, UIS again showcased its offensive prowess, particularly in the third inning, where they scored five runs to take control of the game. Hailey Niebrugge led off with a single, followed by Sophie Rivera’s single that advanced pinch runner Jillian Lane to second. Rosie Bartletti contributed an RBI single, bringing Lane home. Bailey Masching and Calista Stahlhut also added RBI hits, while Rachel McMullen drove in two more runs, concluding the inning with UIS leading 5-0.
The Prairie Stars added three more runs in the fourth inning, reaching a score of 8-3 after a series of walks and hits, including an RBI walk from Masching and a single from Olivia DeLuca. However, Lewis mounted a comeback, scoring three runs in the fifth inning, narrowing the gap to 8-6. Despite a late-game push from Lewis that resulted in one more run, UIS held on for the win.
Calista Stahlhut started in the circle for UIS, pitching four innings and striking out five. She secured her 12th win of the season, while Alexis Carroll earned a save with 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one earned run on two hits. Bailey Masching led offensively with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Stahlhut also contributed with a run, a hit, and an RBI.
“The offense really stepped up and propelled us through the game. Bailey Masching had a great game both offensively and defensively, making huge plays at third base. Calista started the game in the circle and gave us four strong innings. Lexi did a great job of getting us through the last few innings. Sophie had a nice day at the plate, finding ways to get on base and setting the table for the top of the lineup.”
With the victories, UIS secured a spot in the GLVC Tournament, set for May 6-9 in East Peoria, Ill.
UIS wraps up the regular season Sunday with a noon doubleheader against Upper Iowa before turning its focus to the tournament. A senior recognition ceremony will follow the games.
“We have a big day tomorrow and are excited to celebrate our seven seniors,” added Guthrie. “They have given a lot to the program, and we want to give them one more great day on the Prairie!”
