Illinois Springfield women’s tennis defeated Campbellsville 4-3 in Owensboro, Ky., on Saturday, securing the doubles point and splitting singles play to earn the win.
UIS opened the match strong in doubles, as Ema Norma Bordean and Niamh Grogan earned a 6-3 win at No. 1. Maria Garcia Gama and Alisha Deogaonkar fell 6-1 at No. 2, but Jane Carter and Cristina Mendoza Romero responded with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for UIS.
In singles, Ema Norma Bordean continued her strong day with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1. Cristina Mendoza Romero added another three-set victory at No. 2, winning 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Maria Garcia Gama picked up a straight-set win at No. 6, 6-1, 6-2.
Campbellsville earned wins at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles. Alisha Deogaonkar fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, Niamh Grogan dropped a three-set match 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 4, and Jane Carter fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
The Prairie Stars improved to 6-9 overall.
Illinois Springfield returns to action Sunday against Kentucky Wesleyan at noon.
