Jake Nance will always remember his 18th birthday. The Athens pitcher threw a complete game shutout in which his Warriors beat Maroa-Forsyth 10-0 in the 2A Athens regional semifinal after losing to the Trojans 10-0 in the Sangamo conference regular season.
Nance and Will Horve were locked into a pitcher’s duel until the fifth inning when Nick King broke up the shutout and got the Warriors on the board. Athens scored two more in the sixth off a Mason Reiff single and then opened the floodgates for seven runs in the top of the seventh to put it away.
Athens will play Warrensburg-Latham on Saturday at 11 a.m. for the regional crown, looking for win number 20 on the season after setting the school record on Thursday with 19.
