The Spartans scored five runs in the first inning and were able to hold off a late rally from the Tornadoes to advance to state. St. Joseph Ogden beat Tri-City 9-5 on Monday afternoon in the 2A Athens super sectional to keep their season alive.
Tri-City (32-2) got RBI knocks from Katie Jarrett and Anna Sagle in the third and sixth innings to give the Tornadoes hope but they could never overcome the five run first inning that started with a two run blast from Bailey Dowling, one of many Spartans committed to a division one school.
