Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!
Xavier Bishop (Lanphier Guard) Xa. What do we really need to say? If you don’t know what Bishop did last Friday night, then you probably don’t belong on our website. When the 2015 NBA Finals MVP tweets at you, you probably did something pretty special. Bishop scored 21 on Thursday night, 50 on Friday night and 30 on Saturday night. He is now the record holder for most points in a single City game and in an overall tournament with 101 total. Keep an eye out in the next couple weeks, there’s a pretty big record he’s closing in on for the Lions.
Anthony Fairlee & Trevyon Williams (Southeast) We couldn’t decide between these two Spartans so they both get the nod for Prime Time Performer this week. Fairlee, just a freshman, has already made quite a name for himself in City history. Not only did his baseline hammer jam set the Spartan faithful off, he put up 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the East Side and they needed every single one to upset Lanphier. Williams joins his teammate though because without Trey’s three-point shot to send the game into overtime, Fairlee’s effort would have been all for not. Almost more impressive was that Williams had just one turnover in 32 minutes of action against Lanphier as the primary ballhandler.
Emily Jessup (Auburn Guard) Just when Williamsville thought they had the County Tournament won…Jessup’s jumper spoiled their celebration. Jessup hit a three that hit the front of the rim and then dropped in with less than a second left to seal a Trojan victory. She earned all-tournament team honors and gave Auburn nation another reason to celebrate this season. Beating Williamsville proves that these Trojans can truly be a team to watch as postseason play looms right around the corner.
Angela Perry (Rochester Forward) The Rockets have won 30 straight games in the Central State Eight conference and it’s no coincidence that Perry has been a big part of those. The junior scored 23 points against Jacksonville on Saturday and had 15, including all seven of Rochester’s point in overtime, in a huge win over previously undefeated Springfield High. Perry reached 1,000 points in her career also last week with 21 points against Eisenhower.
Terrion Taborn (Springfield Wrestler) The 220 pound Senator wrestler has compiled a record of 36-2 this season and came home from the Fort Zumwalt South Invitational with a first place finish, going 5-0 in the tourney. Taborn’s performance helped Springfield High to a second place finish. Expect to see Taborn wrestling on a Saturday night at the State Farm Center in Champaign in a few weeks.
Ryan Roscetti (Riverton Guard) It wasn’t an individual effort by any means for the Hawks on Friday night, but Roscetti scored 14 points and Riverton opened up even more eyes with a win over Athens. He also added 20 points in a win over Illini Central earlier in the week. Roscetti has the Hawks out to a 4-0 start to their Sangamo season and the senior leader is showing opponents that he, along with Zak Merchant and Anthony Frank, are going to be tough to stop.
Matt Watson (Williamsville Guard) Locked in a defensive battle, the Bullets needed someone to step up and knock down a shot. The senior point guard for Coach Nick Beard did just that to close out the first quarter against PORTA and Williamsville never looked back. Watson hit two three-pointers in the first quarter on his way to a 17 point night to lead the Purple and Gold to another Sangamo win. Watson added 12 in a win over Decatur Lutheran on Tuesday also.
Micah Tapscott (Athens Forward) If you single-handily outscore the other team, you deserve a nod in Prime Time Performers. Tapscott scored 28 points to lead Athens to a win against Illini Central. The Warriors won easily 68-18 for a conference win. Tapscott, along with Emily Nordsiek, has the Warriors ready for another postseason run.
Noah Mayes (Auburn Wrestler) Watch out for the cement roll from Mr. Mayes. The Trojan wrestler has his favorite move down pat and opponents have trouble stopping it. Mayes used it to pick up three wins on Thursday in Auburn’s Quad, moving him into first place in school history for career wins at 125. Mayes still has a little less than a month to add to that total as he works his way towards the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Brandon Hay (Glenwood Hockey) The Titans skater torched the ice this week and deserves a little love in the Prime Time Performer list. The junior forward scored four goals and had an assist against their rivals from SHG in a huge conference win. Hay followed that up with four more goals against Bloomington. Eight goals in two games is an impressive feat no matter who he’s playing against.
