Athens watched a 28-12 halftime lead dwindle down to just nine in the third quarter but Nick Hanner put the team on his back and willed the Warriors to a 49-26 win over New Berlin.
Playing without starting linebacker and running back Hunter Maxwell and junior running back Drayton Davis trying to play with a separated shoulder, the Warriors relied on their ground game to get the job done in the second half against a Pretzels team that scored on two straight drives to start the second half and cut into the Athens lead.
Athens goes into Williamsville next week with a 6-2 record, while the New Berlin Pretzels head home to host an Auburn team who both sit at 4-4 looking for a playoff berth.
