Southeast knew they were the underdogs heading into Tuesday's 3A Springfield Supersectional at the PCCC against defending state runner-up Belleville Althoff (30-2). But then, that's the way they were looked at most of this season. The Spartans, who beat Lanphier for a City Championship and forced their way into a four-way share of a CS8 title saw that run end in an 83-69 decision to the Crusaders.
Southeast kept pace for much of the first quarter before Althoff hit the gas to take a six point advantage to the quarter and a 12 point lead to the half. The Crusaders stretched that lead out to 25 points in the final minute of the third quarter when everyone at the Center was moved to the basement with tornado sirens blaring through town.
When the game resumed, it was all but determined. Trevyon Williams and D'Angelo Hughes had 17 a piece for Southeast. All five of Althoff's starters scored double digits.
