LLCC: Women Loggers Basketball Fall in a Close One

A late 3 point basket with  7.3 seconds remaining lifted Illinois Central College to a 67-64 victory over Lincoln Land. The Loggers had an opportunity to tie but the attempted 3 point shot fell short of the rim.

The Loggers started the game shooting 50% from the field behind a powerful inside game from Marley Smith. This led to Lincoln Land jumping out to a 17-12 first quarter advantage.

The Logger’s scoring remained consistent in the second frame but ICC found their rhythm. The Cougars were able to outscore LLCC 23-17 for a 35-34 halftime lead. Smith was an offensive juggernaut as she had 15 points in the half. Sam Lindhorst added 6 points while Durbin Thomas drained a three.

The Logger’s regrouped to start the third period. Once again , Lincoln Land stepped up offensively and defensively. The Logger’s scored 18 points in the quarter to take a 52-49 lead entering the final frame.

The fourth quarter saw several lead changes. With 38 seconds remaining in the game, Sam Lindhorst had a powerful drive and finish to even the score at 64. With a timeout and ball advancement, ICC was able to kick the ball to the corner for a go ahead basket. Lincoln Land was forced to call timeout and advance the ball with 7.3 seconds remaining. Durbin Thomas received the inbounds pass and found Avrie Schmidt at the top of the key. Schmidt’s three point attempt fell short as the Cougars held on for the 67-64 win.
Marley Smith led all scorers with 24 points. She also had a team high 7 rebounds before fouling out with 2:30 in the contest. Sam Lindhorst poured in 12 points and dished out 3 assists.Avrie Schmidt and Megan Harrell each scored 8 while Whitney Rumbold contributed 7. Durbin Thomas had 5 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Lincoln Land continues Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 24 as they travel to Quincy,IL to face John Wood.
Lincoln Land slips to 15-3 and 2-1 in M-WAC play.
