Prairie Stars Distance Squad Opens Outdoor Season at WashU Distance Carnival

UIS men’s track and field opened its outdoor season Friday at the WashU Distance Carnival, competing in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races.

In the men’s 5,000 meters, freshman River Derby posted a personal-best time of 15:43, while sophomore Lucas Naugle recorded a personal-best 16:13.

The Prairie Stars turned in a particularly strong showing in the 10,000 meters, highlighted by four personal bests and a pair of experienced upperclassmen running just over 31 minutes. Junior Joey Karlesky finished 19th overall with a personal-best time of 31:03, while junior Matt Padilla followed closely in 31:06, finishing 24th overall. Sophomore Dominic Cantarini ran 31:25, and senior Isaac Cortes crossed in 31:33. Junior Owen Whelan finished in 31:56, while freshman Charlie Borlin was right behind in 31:58. Sophomore Ryan Kries added a personal-best 32:54.

“I couldn’t be more excited for how our 5k and 10k squads opened up today!” said head coach Emmons King. “We saw multiple personal bests and new additions to the record book top-10. This will give us great momentum into the rest of the outdoor season!”
