A slow start didn’t keep the #20 ranked Lincoln Land women’s basketball team from defeating John Wood Wednesday night. The Loggers found themselves down 10-4 early in the contest but clawed their way back to an even 16-16 game.
The Logger offense heated up during the second period behind 11 first half points from Sophomore, Marley Smith. A key contributor in the quarter was Sophomore, Nolee Sollars. The 5’4 guard drained two three point baskets to keep the Loggers on top. Lincoln Land outscored the Blazers 21-18 to take a 37-34 halftime lead.
Megan Harrell came to life in the second half. The 5’10 Redshirt Freshman took over offensively with 14 points. Behind Harrell’s performance and Whitney Rumbold going 9/9 from the free throw line,
Lincoln Land extended their lead to 58-52 going into the fourth quarter.
A tightly contested fourth quarter saw the Loggers out scoring the Blazers 18-14. Lincoln Land was able to hold John Wood to their lowest scoring quarter of the game. A controlled offense kept the Blazers on their heels as Lincoln Land took the conference victory 76-66.
Freshmen guard Durbin Thomas had a career high 10 rebounds and 4 assists and 7 points in the contest. A balanced scoring attack saw four Loggers in double digits. Meg Harrell lead the way with 18 followed by Marley Smith 13, Avrie Schmidt 13 and Whitney Rumbold 11. Sam Lindhorst added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Nolee Sollars finished with 6 points.
Lincoln Land improves to 16-3 and 3-1 in the M-WAC. The Loggers return to action Saturday, Jan. 27 as they host Parkland College in a 1:00 game.
