LLCC: Women Loggers Basketball Team Scored Season High 49 Points in First Half

Carl Sandburg College – 64

Lincoln Land – 94

The Lincoln Land women’s basketball team played host to non-conference foe Carl Sandburg College in an afternoon match up on Martin Luther King day and won a decisive 94-64 victory.

This was a much anticipated battle of 13 win teams.  “We were excited to play this one” stated Logger coach Chad Jones.  Lincoln Land jumped to an early lead behind a frantic half court trapping press.  The Loggers were able to force Carl Sandburg into 20 first half turnovers.  The first quarter finished with the Loggers holding an 11 point lead.  The Chargers would never seriously threaten the game the rest of the way.

The Loggers scored a season high 49 points in the first half.  Most of the Logger baskets came as a result of their press.  “I was proud of the energy today.  I was a bit worried with us having played yesterday due to the weather cancellation.” said Jones. The Loggers will play four games in seven days.

The third period saw Carl Sandburg play the Loggers evenly, and actually out score the Loggers by one in the period.  Lincoln Land managed to easily put the game away in the final frame by adding to its lead.

The Loggers filled the stat sheet on the afternoon.  Megan Harrell and Avrie Schmidt each poured in season highs of 27 points.  Marley Smith had 17 while freshman Whitney Rumbold had another solid game contributing 14 points.  Rumbold lead the Loggers with 10 rebounds.  Freshman Sam Lindhorst dished out a career high 11 assists to lead the Loggers.

“This was a good win against a good team. Our girls really responded to the schedule changing.  I was proud on several fronts today” said Jones.

Lincoln Land improves to 14-2 on the year while Carl Sandburg falls to 13-5.  Lincoln Land has another quick turnaround and will play on the road Wednesday evening at Lewis and Clark College in an MWAC contest.
