LLCC: Women’s Basketball Win First Game Back From Break

A cold snowy trip to Chicago did not stop the Lincoln Land women’s basketball team from taking a 67-49 victory over Prairie State. The Loggers never trailed in the game as they won their 12th game of the season.
Lincoln Land jumped out to a 17-13 first quarter lead. The Logger’s Marley Smith was instrumental in building the Lincoln Land advantage. The 5’10 Sophomore went 6-6 from the free throw line to score 14 first half points. Red shirt Freshman, Meg Harrell, found her shooting form to finish with 7 points in the half. Freshman Sam Lindhorst tossed in 6 points as the Loggers outscored Prairie State 21-6 in the second quarter. Lincoln Land entered the third quarter up 38-19
The second half was a fairly evenly played game. Prairie State made a run with 5:30 left in the frame to cut the Logger lead to 14. Lincoln Land with stood the run with some spectacular play by Avrie Schmidt and Sam Lindhorst. Schmidt scored on a saucy baseline drive with a reverse layup while Lindhorst got a steal and went coast to coast for an and one finish. Lincoln Land was still able to outscore Prairie State 14-13.
The final period was all about time and score for Lincoln Land. The Loggers were still able grow their biggest lead to 65-38 with 3:00 remaining in the game. Prairie State was able to knock down three 3 point baskets in the final 2 minutes to make the final score 67-49.
Marley Smith finished with another double/double of 20 points and 15 rebounds. Meg Harrell had a nice game finishing with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Avrie Schmidt pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 9 points. Whitney Rumbold scored 7 points with 7 rebounds. Durbin Thomas had 4 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Lincoln Land begins M-WAC play next Saturday, Jan. 13 as they host Spoon River in a 1:00 contest at Cass Gym.
LLCC improves to 12-2 on the season.
