The Lincoln Land women’s basketball team faced Southwestern Illinois College for the second time in 5 days. The Logger’s were able to avenge an earlier loss to the Blue Storm for a 74-67 victory.
SWIC got out to an early 19-11 first quarter lead. The Logger’s offense woke up during the second frame to outscore the Storm 19-18. Marley Smith led the offensive punch with 13 first half points. Megan Harrell and Avrie Schmidt both drained a 3 point basket in the quarter.
Entering the third period down 37-30, Lincoln Land was able to cut into the SWIC advantage once again. The Loggers outscored SWIC 18-16 but were still trailing 53-48.
The Loggers fate came down to the final quarter. Down 5, Lincoln Land proceeded to cut through the SWIC full court pressure. As a result, the Loggers were able overcome the deficit for their first lead of the game at the 5:47 mark.
Avrie Schmidt was instrumental in the comeback as the Sophomore forward nailed her second three of the game and had a coast to coast layup against the press. The Loggers would not trail again as they extended the leas to 8 points. Meg Harrell put the game out of reach by knocking down 2 free throws with 6.8 seconds remaining. The Logger victory boosted the record to 4-1.
Marley Smith had career highs of 33 points and 18 rebounds. Meg Harrell finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals while Avrie Schmidt had 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Sam Lindhorst had a season high 7 rebounds to go along with her 5 points and 3 steals. Rounding out the scoring was, Durbin Thomas 5, Alexis Wade 2, Whitney Rumbold 2.
Lincoln Land will get back in action Saturday, Nov. 18 as they host D1 Triton College at 1:00pm.
