LLCC: The Loggers Chop Down D1 Olney Central College Saturday

The Lincoln Land women’s basketball team traveled to Mattoon, IL Saturday afternoon to take on D1 Olney Central College. A strong second half by Lincoln Land proved to be the difference as the Loggers won 61-42.

Olney Central held an early 12-10 advantage after one period of play. Avrie Schmidt and Megan Harrell each drained a 3 in the quarter.

Lincoln Land, behind Marley Smith’s 5 made free throws and another made 3 by Schmidt, overcame the OCC lead for a 29-20 halftime advantage.

The third quarter proved to be the knockout punch for the Loggers. The Loggers outscored Olney 24-13 behind 3 point baskets by Harrell and Alexis Wade.

Entering the final frame up 53-33, Lincoln Land’s Marley Smith scored 6 of the Logger’s 8 points. However, Olney was able to outscore Lincoln Land 9-8 but it wasn’t enough to threaten the Logger’s 61-42 win.

Sophomore Marley Smith was the game’s leading scorer. Smith finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman Megan Harrell contributed 12 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore Avrie Schmidt finished with 8 points and Freshman Durbin Thomas had 7. Rounding out the Logger scoring was Freshman Whitney Rumbold 4 and Freshman Sam Lindhorst 1.

Lincoln Land improves to 3-1 and will travel to Belleville, IL Wednesday, November 15 to face Southwestern Illinois.
