Athens struggled to find their offense in the first four minutes of the game, but after turning up their defense built as much as an eight point lead in the fourth quarter. Lutheran High hit big threes down the stretch by Aryanna Harris and Alliyah Turner to cut the lead to one with 3 seconds to play, but Athens held on a 45-44 win over the Crusaders in the 2019 Sangamon County Tournament quarterfinals.
Taylor Harris had 11 for Athens, while Libby Cronister and Morgan Penrod added eight. Emily Stoeckel had 15 for the Crusaders.
Athens will play Pleasant Plains on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for a spot in Thursday night’s championship.
