With three starters sitting out the first quarter due to disciplinary reasons and two of them for the entire first half, Athens had to comeback in the fourth quarter and then survive a late scare to hold off Triopia for a 57-56 win to start the Waverly Holiday Tournament.
Nick Hanner had to shoulder the scoring in the first quarter while Hunter Maxwell, Drayton Davis and Ethan Chavis sat and watched the Trojans take a lead into the half.
The top seeded Athens will play Tri-City at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
