State-Bound Cyclones! SHG Beats St. Laurence To Earn Another Trip To Champaign

For the third time in four years, SHG will play for an football state championship. The Cyclones defeated Burbank St. Laurence 28-16 in Saturday’s 6A state semifinal at SHG’s west campus.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 21-0 first half lead but a late St. Laurence touchdown to end the first half closed it to a two score game and an early touchdown to start the third made it 21-14. The Vikings had a chance to tie the game after SHG was stopped on 4th and 1 on their own 16 yard line on the following drive, but the Cyclones got a stop and scored on a Tim Brenneisen touchdown pass to Vince Mounce late in the third quarter.

SHG was playing in their fifth state semifinal in the last six seasons. It was the first 6A semifinal in that period.
