Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.
You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm.
Zak Wardlow (Glenwood Running Back) There was serious question marks coming into week one as they headed to Southeast. What would that offense look like? We knew Zak Wardlow was back after a solid junior year showing, but he stepped into his senior with a superb showing. He got 31 carries against the Spartans and totaled 281 yards, while scoring four times for the Titans. In a game that saw over 100 points scored, Wardy was a big reason that David Hay got his first win as the Head Coach of the Glenwood Titans.
Gavin Webb (Southeast Quarterback) There is little doubt that Gavin Webb will be playing on Saturdays next season, the question is where. The Spartan senior who Coach Matt Lauber has leading his offense this season was able to throw for 369 yards against Glenwood’s defense and score five touchdowns, while also putting 56 rushing yards. Athletically, Webb is right up there with the best in the CS8, he’s one to watch every Friday night with his abilities.
Caleb Small (Springfield High Fullback) There’s the Jones boys that defensive coordinators have to plan for when facing the Senators each week. Well, after week one, CS8 coaches have to watch out for sophomore Caleb Small. The Springfield High running back busted out a 46 yard run on their first drive and finished up 64 yards on the ground to go with a rushing and a receiving touchdown. In a difficult offense to plan for, Coach Gully has a solid option in the backfield for the next few years in Small.
Tremayne Lee (SHG Running Back) Every year we come across athletes that are simply must see each and every week. Cyclone junior running back Tremayne Lee is in that category already, no question about it. He amassed 162 yards on 13 carries against Jacksonville. Lee found the end zone four times against the Crimsons, three on the ground and one on a 58 yard reception from Tim Brenneisen. After week one, Lee already has 221 yards of combined offense and defensive coordinators dreading playing SHG.
Collin Stallworth (Rochester Wide Receiver) Chase Senior called him “a high school Randy Moss” after seeing the Rockets for the first half opening week. It doesn’t matter who Derek Leonard has throwing him the ball, Stallworth is going to catch and he’ll likely score. In week one against Lanphier, he had three receiving touchdowns, the first on the second play from scrimmage from 32 yards out, the second from 14 on the very next drive and finally a 35 yarder in the second quarter.
Hunter Maxwell (Athens Running Back) If Nick Hanner hands the ball off to Hunter Maxwell, there’s a good chance there’s a positive gain coming. The athletic running back picked up 100 yards in the first half and a total of 141 against Plains on just 13 carries to keep the Cardinals in the box, which opened up the pass game for Hanner to find Devin Richardson for two touchdowns. Maxwell may have been more impressive on defense though, picking up a couple sacks and a game sealing interception, along with a few Big Nasties.
Cayden Muench (Auburn Wide Receiver) Speaking of guys who did a little bit of everything, how about the junior out of Auburn who showed out on offense, defense and special teams? Cayden Muench had a touchdown catch, two interceptions and a 75 yard punt return touchdown. Replacing guys like Drew Points is a must if the Trojans want a return trip North at the end of November and Muench just might be the answer for Dave Bates.
Asa Donaldson (North Mac Running Back) The reigning Sangamo champs return a stable of running backs that have them in a prime spot to repeat their run. Having three guys who can put up big numbers might take away touches from each individual, but Asa Donaldson made his count on Friday night. He got 13 carries and racked up 123 yards on the ground, scoring three times for the Panthers in their opener against PORTA.
Justice Ferrier (Williamsville Quarterback) The team who returns with the best running back in the Sangamo had another guy rush for almost 100 yards on Friday night. That’s a scary combination if Justice Ferrier can continue to put up those numbers. The Bullet junior quarterback picked up 95 yards on the ground to go with 113 in the air, two touchdowns on the ground and two in the air. Oh and we can’t forget to mention the two Big Nasties Justice picked up by trucking a couple Riverton defenders.
Josh Cable (Rochester Cross Country) In terms of other fall sports, there’s a guy out in Rochester to keep your eye on. The Rockets cross country star Josh Cable is one of the best in the state and showed that opening weekend. At the First to Finish Kickoff Meet ran at SIUE, he finished second with a time of 17 minutes and 7.5 seconds.
Steven Albers (Jacksonville Forward) Every soccer team needs a dynamic scorer that can always find a way to put the ball in the back of the net. For the Crimsons, that’s senior Steven Albers who is quickly approaching the school scoring record. He started the season strong, scoring a hat trick and assisting on another against SHG. Over the weekend, he had a four goal game against Jefferson City in a tournament over in Quincy.
