A day after pounding the baseball for 13 runs on 15 hits against Limestone in the state semfinal, Springfield’s bats were held in check and the Senators made uncharacteric mistakes out in the field, falling to Lemont 10-0 in the 3A state championship.
Lemont ace, Garrett Acton pitched six innings of scoreless ball for the Indians. One of Springfield’s main strengths this season has been its pitching, but the Senators went through five pitchers on Saturday. The Senators were only to manage three hits offensively.
Springfield finishes state runner-up for the second time in school history. The last time Springfield finished second was 1985. The 2016 Senators go down as arguably the best team in Senators history. Their 34-6 record is now tops in the record books at Springfield.
