Springfield High jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings of play at Saturday's 3A Lanphier regional championship game against Rochester. What looked to be a runaway win for the first SHS regional crown in 16 years saw the Rockets finish the game with the potential tying run at the plate in an 11-7 Senator victory.
Rochester's Tyler Fitzgerald was largely responsible for the comeback attempt. The Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Illinois blasted two home runs and drove in five on the day. Fitzgerald is likely to be a high round draft pick in next week's MLB draft.
Springfield advances to Wednesday's sectional semifinals where they'll play Champaign Central.
