Prime Time Performers: April 18th – 23rd

Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!

Kendrick Grifin (Lanphier track) Last week Lanphier’s A’Jonte Lee earned the Prime Time Performer nod for a first place finish in the high jump at 6’6”. This week it’s his teammates, Grifin who gets it. Grifin won the high jump at the Lion Invite on Saturday by clearing 6’6”, beating Lee at 6’4”. Those two at the top of the list helped Lanphier win the boys team title as well.

Hope Tewes (Plains track) There were plenty of track standout performances on Saturday but not many can top Tewes. She set a new meet record, school record and a personal record by clearing 5’8” in the high jump at the Rocket Invite. After that she still had the energy to anchor Plains’ 4×200 meter relay team that set a new meet record at 1:47.48. The icing on the cake for Tewes was winning the 200 as well helping the Cardinals win the team title as well.

Ashleigh Cearlock (SHG soccer) If you visited our website last week, you saw plenty of highlights of Cearlock leading the Cyclones to victory. SHG went a perfect 3-0 in their own tourney and Cearlock was a huge reason why. She scored a hat trick on Saturday against United Township. Two days prior, Cearlock scored the game’s only goal and earned SHG the 1-0 win over Quincy Notre-Dame.

Kam Corner (Glenwood track) After his teammate broke the school record in the long jump, Corner got a quick glimpse of Tony Rolfe pulling up the 100 meter dash with a right leg injury so he picked up him up. Korner set a personal record and won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.08. That wasn’t the only time he crossed the finish line first on Friday though at the Titan Invite. Corner set a personal record and won the 200 as well with a time of 22.65. He also anchored the 4×100 meter relay and the 4×200 meter relay in wins for the Glenwood to give the Titans boys the title.

Ozzy Erewele (Springfield High track) Erewele essentially did the same thing for Springfield that Glenwood’s Corner did at Friday's meet. She won the 100, 200 and anchored the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays in wins for Springfield High. Erewele broke her own school record she set a couple weeks ago in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.03. She also set a personal record and won the 200 with a time of 25.86.

Amanda Williams (Rochester soccer) The Rochester Lady Rockets have only one loss on their record this season. Williams in the middle of the field is a huge part of Chad Kutcher’s system and success this year. Williams netted a hat trick in the rain against Jacksonville last week and then picked up a couple of assists against Belleville West in their rebound game after losing Friday night. And if your a Big Nasty enthusiast, you’ve seen her plenty of times this season.

Tai Haney (Auburn pitcher) Most of Auburn’s games got rained out last week but they started the week strong on the arm of Tai Haney. He only needed 43 pitches to pick up a five inning win. He faced the minimum against North Mac, giving up just two hits but his defense and catcher Nate Brauer picked up him. He had two hits at the dish as well, including a double while knocking in four runs in Auburn's 10-0 win.

Kahlil Wassell (New Berlin track) A lot of track records stick around for awhile but not when Wassell rolls into town. The Pretzel sprinter came into Rochester and broke the 200 meter dash record. The previous record holder was at 22.4, Wassell finished in 22.05. Not only did he win the 200, he also took home first in the 100 and 400.

Tommy Drake (SHG baseball) One of the biggest clutch moments of the week came off the bat of Drake last weekend. Playing Lutheran South out of Missouri, the Cyclones were down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Drake came up and got his third hit of the game at the right time, scoring Devin Thomas and Cal Elvers with his single and SHG would go on to win 2-1. Drake also drove in two runs against MacArthur and went 3-4 with a RBI against QND.

Vince Vignali (Williamsville baseball) The Bullets picked up two wins on Saturday and Vingali combined for six hits in those two games. He went 3 for 3 with a double against Normal and then had three hits with a double against Holy Trinity.

Shaye Virgin (PORTA softball) There’s a few area teams that we know we have to get to and PORTA is certainly at the top of the list after they knocked off Tri-City. Virgin led off the eighth inning with a double and came in to score on an error to lift the Bluejays over the Tornadoes 3-2. That’s a huge win for PORTA.

Mackenzie Baptist (Riverton softball) Regardless of opponent, we’ve made it a point to put up Prime Time Performer selections if they can throw a no-no this season. Baptist picked up no-hitter, while striking out 11 batters in the Hawks’ 10-0 win over Morrisonville last week. She only walked three batters and threw over 70 percent of her pitches for strikes against the Mohawks.
