Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!
Heath Warren (Springfield High track) The future Oklahoma Sooner showed out at the Capital City Classic winning the 800 meter run by a full three seconds with a time of 1:53.81. The scary thing is, Warren told us after the race that he didn’t think he ran his best race. This certainly isn’t the last race he’ll win this year in a Senators uniform.
Tony Rolfe (Glenwood track) Saturday he was battling an injury and still won the triple jump at the Capital City Classic with a jump of 45’11.25” to set a new meet record by 2.25 inches. The best part about that is this wasn’t even the junior’s best jump last week. He won the triple jump at the five team Solon-Lion open earlier in the week with a distance of 46’8”. The icing on the cake for Rolfe was that he won the 100 meter dash at that five team meet with a time of 11.28.
A’Jonte Lee (Lanphier track) The North Side still have two and a half more seasons to root for Lee who continues to leap into the record books. On Saturday, the sophomore won the high jump at the Capital City Classic with a jump of 6’6” which ties his personal best.
Theresa Shaff (SHG soccer) The Cyclones took care of business in conference last week and came into Saturday with a four game winning streak. A win over Peoria Notre Dame would show that SHG can really be a 1A state title contender this season and they got it. Senior captain Shaff scored a goal 3 minutes before half on a free kick from 40 yards out that would prove to be the game winner. The defender helped the Cycs shut down the Irish and win the game 2-0.
Katie Weller (SHG softball) There’s plenty of weapons on the SHG Cyclone softball team. We’ve seen that and we’ve done stories about it. Katie Weller just adds to the list of weapons that Yoho has. She started the week going 3 for 3 with five RBI’s against Eisenhower and then on Friday she really earned her spot on the Prime Time Performer list. Her hit to left center that brought in two runs in the top of the seventh inning against Mattoon proved to be the game winner. SHG could definitely see the Green Wave again down the road in the postseason and Weller and the Cycs will be ready.
Carolyn Franke (Glenwood softball) Some may argue that Janek Squibb should be on this list with a 4 for 4 performance including a three run homer for the Titans, but it was Franke who came through in the clutch and the Prime Time Performer nod is headed Franke’s way. She hit a two run, walk off single in the seventh inning to beat SHG. Franke also hit a home run in Glenwood's 21-3 win over Southeast going 2 for 2 with four RBIs and a double.
Austin Chapman (SHG baseball) Good luck finding someone who threw more pitches this week to earn their Prime Time Performer spot. The Cyclone hurler threw 141 pitches against Glenwood and SHG needed every single one in their 3-2 win over their rivals. Chapman chucked his way to 11 strikeouts and earned the win, putting SHG right back in the CS8 race.
Bryant Williams (Plains baseball) The Cardinals have a certain way they play and in order to win, they just need someone to go up their on the bump and throw strikes. This week it was one of their sophomore pitchers who earns the nod from Pleasant Plains. Williams went 6 and 2/3 innings and struck out seven in a shutout 3-0 win over Riverton.
Austin Troemper (Springfield baseball) The Senators had a busy week of winning, which they are slowly getting used to this season. The closest contest for the Solons came at Jacksonville, but Troemper delivered a huge hit that ultimately kept them undefeated in the Central State Eight. His two run single in the top of the eighth inning to give Springfield the 5-3 win. That’s coming up big when the lights were the brightest, earning him a spot on Prime Time Performer.
Sam Baker (Rochester baseball) The Rockets want our respect and they sure are making a strong case lately. The most impressive win they had last week was when they swept Williamsville in a Saturday doubleheader. Baker was a big reason why, throwing a three hit shutout in a 2-0 win and then he had a triple in their 6-1 win. Earlier in the week, he threw two perfect innings in Rochester’s 12-0 win over MacArthur.
John Beal (Williamsville baseball) Even though he claims he didn’t play well on Friday, the numbers say otherwise. Beal is the Bullets ace and he looked the part against a very good Maroa-Forsyth team. He got the win on the mound, going six innings and giving up three runs while striking out six. He also brought the wood on the road, going 3 for 5 at the dish with a double.
Glenwood 4×800 relay team– The four man crew of Justin Montrey, Cameron Williams, Landon Skelly & Chris Durr get a spot since they set a new meet record. The Titans trounced the field at the Capital City Classic with a time of 8 minutes and 6.79 seconds to set the meet record which was 8:09.03. If they can cut about seven more seconds off, they’ll be ready for the 4A state track meet.
