The New Berlin school board voted 6-0 in favor of hiring Blake Lucas as the boys basketball coach on Monday night. One member of the board was not present. Lucas takes over a program that was under the direction of Jon Barth for the last nine seasons. Barth was not renewed this spring.
One parent and one student spoke at the meeting in favor of former assistant Eric Buerkett who applied for the position. Another parent and a faculty member addressed the board in executive session.
Lucas was most recently the head coach at SHG. He compiled a 66-46 record during his four seasons (2011-12 through 2014-15) with the Cyclones. He did not coach during the 2015-16 season.
