Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!
Ozzy Erewele (Springfield High sprinter) Anytime you set a new school record at a storied track program like Springfield High, you get a nod for Prime Time Performer. Erewele ran the 100 meter dash at Southeast on Saturday and won it against plenty of quality sprinters with a time of 12.01. So, Senators can get used to seeing her winning races for awhile.
Payton Long (Williamsville pitcher) Yeah, she was on the list last week, but guess what? Long pitched herself into another spot. She struck out 11, and earned the shutout win over North Mac. Long also pitched four innings against Argenta-Oreana and gave up two hits before Olivia Felts came in and pitched the rest of the game, so Long got win. The Bullets seemed to be locked in the on the softball diamond and the sophomore hurlers including Long are a big reason why.
Jacob Maton (Glenwood pitcher) Speaking of sophomore pitchers, there is a pretty good one out in Chatham throwing for the Titans. Maton, who comes from a pretty solid lineage of pitchers and he showed that off last Tuesday afternoon when he threw 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball in Glenwood’s 6-0 win over SHG to keep them in the CS8 race.
Michael Lavin (Springfield High pitcher) Last week we did a piece on the Springfield High baseball staff after Lavin had himself quite a night out in Lincoln. One of the Senators aces threw a complete game, one-hitter while striking out 13 Railsplitters in Springfield’s 5-0 win. Lavin is one of four guys that Coach Jim Steinwart can throw in conference and expect a solid outing.
Taylor Parriott (Glenwood forward) After getting beat by Springfield High in their home opener, the Titans needed to respond with a strong showing against SHG on Tuesday evening. Glenwood gave up an early goal to the Cyclones, before getting an equalizer from Parriott with 29 minutes to go. After a scoreless 41 minutes following that, Parriott came through in the clutch with a golden goal at the beginning of the second overtime to send Glenwood past SHG 2-1.
Marah Abu-Tayeh (Williamsville forward) The Williamsville Bullets knew the Abu-Tayeh twins were their go-to girls for their scoring this season, but Marah had herself an exceptional week scoring ten goals in three games. Marah scored four goals against Bloomington Central Catholic and then had hat tricks against Pleasant Plains and Carlinville.
Macie Nagel (New Berlin softball) A Sangamo softball game last week produced 33 total runs. The Pretzels came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard, but not because of Nagel. Macie blasted three home runs against Athens and picked up five runs batted in. Maybe Matt Helm’s not the only one out in New Berlin who can rake.
Olivia Carter (Plains pitcher) The Prime Time Performer list always includes area athletes that throw no-hitters, but we haven’t seen too many perfect games yet this season. Cardinals’ pitcher Carter adds her name to that elite list this week. She threw a five inning perfect game and also hit a three run homer in Plains 11-0 win. Her line included seven strikeouts, no walks obviously and 47 strikes in 73 pitches.
Cody Womack (Williamsville pitcher) After the Bullets suffered just their second loss of the season, they needed something to pick them up against Stanford Olympia on Saturday. Womack made that happen by throwing a seven inning no-hitter, giving up just one walk while picking up three strikeouts. Womack and Williamsville won 3-0. The Bullets have the one-two combo of Womack and John Beal and that’ll win them a lot of games this year.
Dalton Settles (Plains pitcher) Small ball allows the Pleasant Plains baseball team to win games, but they still need someone to go out and throw strikes on the bump. Settles showed up strong this week, throwing a complete game while striking out seven and giving up just four hits and two earned runs in the birds’ 13-3 win over Routt. On Saturday, Settles pitched six innings against Nokomis and gave up just two runs again, both coming in the first inning. He picked his game up and allowed the Cardinals to comeback and get a 7-2 win over the Redskins.
