Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!
Tristan Weaver (Auburn pitcher) When opponents step to the plate and see the Trojan lefty staring them down from the mound this year, they better bring their big bat. Weaver gave up zero hits in five innings of work and struck out 12 in Auburn’s 6-1 win over Hillsboro. Last Monday against Lanphier, Weaver struck out all nine batters he faced.
Amanda Williams (Rochester midfielder) The Rockets have picked up right where they left off last Spring when they won a state championship and are 4-0 to start this soccer season. A big reason why they went 4-0 in week one was Williams who scored on an assist from Ally Milnes for a 1-0 win to seal the Metro Cup in Edwardsville on Saturday. Williams also scored on a free kick with 15 minutes left to give Rochester a 3-2 win over Belleville East earlier in the week and had a goal against Springfield High in their first conference victory of the year.
Matt Helm (New Berlin baseball) They say you can only make one first impression. Well, Pretzel nation must be mighty happy with their first look at Helm. The New Berlin freshman hit a two run home run in his first at bat of his high school career. The Pretzels beat Athens 4-3 to win their first conference game of the season, so Helm’s dinger was huge.
Zak Merchant (Riverton pitcher) We saw Merchant’s range on the hardwood and it seems he’s a stud on the diamond as well. Merchant struck out eight batters from the bump, hit a two run double and went 3-3 with three RBI’s in a 9-2 win over Southeast. On Saturday, he followed that up with three hits, three RBI’s and scoring two runs in Riverton’s wins over Princeville and Sciota West Prairie at Lenz Field.
Katie Elmore (Lutheran High soccer) How’s this for a week on the soccer pitch? Five goals and four assists in three games that won the Crusaders their own tournament to start the season. Elmore had a goal and an assist against Beardstown, one goal and three assists against Athens and a solid hat trick against Lanphier.
John Plattner (SHG first baseman) The Cyclones opened the season with a struggle against Williamsville, but they were able to rebound a day later in their home opener against Pleasant Plains, powered by Plattner’s big day at the plate. The first baseman had three hits and three RBI’s including a triple in an 8-2 win over the Cardinals.
Vince Vignali (Williamsville center fielder) The Bullets dropped a tough one in the state championship last season and have started this season like they’re determined to get back there and come home victorious. The Bullets look strong on the diamond and anchored in center field is one of the best athletes in the area. Vignali went 4-4 in the leadoff spot against SHG including a double and a solo home run, picking up two RBI’s as the Bullets sent SHG home with an 11-3 loss.
