Trey Hild played with fire and won on Friday night in his 132 pound 1A state semifinal match. Auburn's Peyton Hudspeth wasn't so fortunate in his 195 pound semifinal against the defending state champion in that weight class.
Hild opened a 5-0 first period lead against Morrison's Joe Eads. His lead was 6-2 early in the third when Eads accounted for a take down and a three point near fall that gave him a 7-6 advantage. Hild was able to earn a point for an escape, tying the match at 7-7 and forcing an overtime. Hild then took advantage in extra time, securing a two point takedown to win 9-7 and advance to Saturday's finals where he'll meet undefeated Nolan Baker of Byron.
Hudspeth entered as the underdog against St. Joseph Ogden's Wesley Kibler who won the 1A 195 pound title last season. Hudspeth battled to a 0-0 draw through a period, but Kibler was the more energetic wrestler in the second period, earning a win by fall at 3:50. Hudspeth will wrestle Vandalia's Bobby Bradley with a trip to the third place match on the line on Saturday morning. Hudspeth beat Bradley 3-2 in last week's sectional finals.
