City Tournament can create legends and on Friday night, Lanphier’s Xavier Bishop became one. The Lanphier senior broke Dave Robisch’s 50 year old single game scoring record at City with a 50 point performance. Robisch scored 39 in 1966 and the record had held up until Friday.
Lanphier also broke the single game points record for a team with the 103-56 win over SHG. The Lions will play Southeast on Saturday at 8pm for the City Title. Southeast improved to 2-0 at City Tournament with a 54-47 win over Springfield High on Friday.
Bishop scored seven points in one trip in a 15 point first quarter as City historians started to raise their eyebrows. Bishop was fouled intentionally on a breakaway layup which he made. He then sank the two free throws before Lanphier got the ball back because of the intentional foul. On that possession Bishop was fouled on a three pointer which he missed, but he made the three free throws that came as a result.
Bishop then closed the half out with three consecutive three pointers. He was 4-of-5 from three point range in the first half and 6-of-11 in the game. The City Tournament record for three pointers in a game is seven. Bishop had 29 points at the half.
He broke the record on a breakaway layup that he was fouled on. The layup put him at 40. The free throw put him at 41. He reached 50 with less than a minute to play in the third quarter when he was removed from the game.
