Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!
Xavier Bishop (Lanphier Guard) Tired of seeing Bishop’s name on this list? We sure aren’t considering we only have, at maximum, two more months to see this kid ball. The Lion leader loves the spotlight and continues to show off week in and week out. Bishop led all scorers in the CS8 game of the week on Friday, fueling a three point road win at Roy S. Anderson gymnasium with 16 points. He followed that up less than 20 hours later in the Highland Shootout by scoring 23 points, including 18 in the second half, against one of Missouri’s best teams. Don’t forget about the 25 he dropped in a win over MacArthur earlier in the week.
Trevyon Williams (Southeast Guard) The Southeast Spartans picked up two more Central State Eight wins last week and Williams was a big reason why. With D’Angelo Hughes being held in check on Tuesday against Lincoln, Williams led the team in scoring with 13 points. On Friday night, playing Ike for the third time this year and with Isaiah Walton out with an ankle injury, Williams scored 14 points, including eight in a huge run that got the Spartans going against the Panthers on the road. We can’t wait to see what Williams will do next week at City because this kid shines on the big stage.
Ethan Hunt (Glenwood Guard) The Titans are quietly working their way up the Power Rankings in the Central State Eight, but this is the Prime Time Performer list. Hunt helped Glenwood pick up two more wins in conference this week. He got the scoring started with a couple long balls and finished with 13 points in a blowout road win over Jacksonville on Tuesday and then he scored 15 points in a home domination of their rival SHG. Paired with Parker Allen, this back court for Coach Todd Blakeman can score enough to get Glenwood wins when they play defense like they have this season.
Ryan Roscetti (Riverton Guard) Ro, as he’s known in Hawk territory, has Riverton ready to compete for a Sangamo title. Last week, Roscetti took his team on the road and scored 15 points in a conference win over Auburn and then scored 17 points in a Hawks blowout of North Mac. With handles that have everyone watching and a sweet shooting touch, Roscetti is one of the few area players that people come out to see play ball each week.
Montshianna Pulliam (Springfield High Forward) The Senators are stacked. Springfield High has four or five forwards that see the floor night in and night out and about six or seven guards that can play big minutes. So picking one person from this team for Prime Time Performer isn’t easy, but this week we’ll give the nod to Montshianna Pulliam. She scored 19 points against Lanphier on Thursday and then added 14 against Jacksonville on Saturday. We’re looking forward to potentially seeing the undefeated Senators take on Rochester next Tuesday, pitting Pulliam against Angela Perry in a battle of the bigs.
Catie Eck (SHG Forward) If you score a career high 29 points, you’re on our radar for Prime Time Performer. Eck drained 5 of 7 from three-point range in the Cycs big home win over Southeast in a night she’ll likely never forget. Eck followed up that performance with 12 points in SHG’s win over rival Glenwood on Saturday. Eck and the Cyclones are right behind Rochester and Springfield High in the CS8 race, so keep an eye out for the sharpshooter on a team that has plenty of weapons.
Emily Nordsiek (Athens Guard) The Warriors seem to be back on track and their conductor is clicking on all cylinders. Nordsiek scored 16 and had six steals in Athens’ blowout of North Mac last week and then she netted a game high 22 points in a 20 point win over Illini Bluffs on Saturday. The Warriors have won nine straight and are climbing the rankings in 2A, led by their point guard who’s doing a little bit of everything to help them win.
Angela Perry (Rochester Forward) The Rockets were on the ropes on the road in Railsplitters territory last week, but Perry pounded her way to 17 points and the Central State Eight winning streak continued for Rochester. On Saturday, she didn’t play much because the Rockets won by more than 40, but Perry scored as many points as the Generals did in the whole game…19. Perry paired with Meagan McNicholas makes for a team that can make a return run to Redbird Arena.
Isaac Collins (Pleasant Plains Guard) It’s no secret what Collins can do from long range and yet, he continues to somehow shake defenses and get his treys. Collins connected on 4 for 8 against Gillispie on Tuesday on his way to 18. On Friday, he led the Cardinals in scoring again, this time going 4 for 9 from downtown for 12 points in a 12 point road win over Pawnee. With Plains as the number one seed in the County Tournament this week, watch out for Collins to light it up in Logger Land against area teams.
Dalton Handlin (Rochester Guard) The Rockets have been known to struggle with scoring this year, but Handlin is doing all he can to change that perception. Handlin had big a week, scoring 25 in Rochester’s win over Springfield High and then he followed that up with a team high 22 points on the road as Coach Mike Steers’ squad almost upset MacArthur on Friday. Handlin will get a chance to showcase his offense against smaller teams this week at the County Tournament, which may be great for the Rockets offensive confidence.
Peyton Hudspeth (Auburn Wrestler) Team-wise, the Auburn wrestling team picked up right where the football team left off. The Trojans have torn through their schedule and a big reason why is Hudspeth. He finished third individually this past weekend at the Princeton Invitational, one of the biggest tournaments the Trojans attend all year. Season records and tournament titles don’t matter much for this grappler though, he’s got his eyes on a bigger prize in Champaign next month.
J.D. Turner (Glenwood Wrestler) The Glenwood Titan wrestling team traveled south last weekend and returned home with a first place trophy from a 23 team tourney in Carbondale. A big reason why the red and white returned with first was Turner who won the 152 pound title over a kid from Cahokia he had lost to previously this season. Turner is 16-2 this season and the Titans are the favorites to win over Central State Eight title.
Springfield High Swim Team – The Senators squad won the Ram Relays at Peoria Richwoods for the fourth year in a row on Saturday and set two new meet records. Jake Frech and Matthew Knox swam the 2 x 500 free in 10:09.30 and Michael Patton and Evan Weller reset the 2 x 100 back record in 1:50.58. Springfield swam their way to 190 points, the closest team to them was LaSalle-Peru with 147.
