Matt Reed resigned a week ago today as the Springfield High boys basketball coach. The resignation was sudden and unexpected and came one week to the day before the Senators' first scheduled game of the 2015-16 season.
On Friday, District 186 announced that Preston Snarr would take over as head coach on an interim basis.
Official information regarding Reed's departure and the reason for it has been hard to come by over the past week. Today, Channel1450.com received a copy of a letter addressed to Superintendent Jennifer Gill and the District 186 Board of Education that was signed by 75 members of the Springfield High staff. While the letter doesn't shine a light on all of the details of the Reed situation, it does show a concern over the precedent set by the boards actions, as perceived by those staff members. The letter can be seen in its entirety below. No signatures were on the copy that Channel1450.com received.
When reached for comment about the letter, District 186 officials replied:
"We are not able to provide commentary on personnel matters or individual student concerns. Mr. Reed tendered his resignation as coach, and as described in the letter, remains a respected math teacher at Springfield High School."
