Springfield Boys Basketball Coach Matt Reed Resigns Effective Immediately

Matt Reed resigned as the Springfield Senators boys basketball coach on Monday, saying he was doing what he felt was in the best interest of his family. The sudden news of Reed's departure comes exactly one week before Springfield plays their first game of the season.

Reed sent the following statement to Channel1450.com on Monday afternoon.

"After much thought and contemplation, I have decided to resign my position as Varsity Basketball Coach at Springfield High School, effective immediately.  I believe this is in the best interests of my family. I want to thank my past players for their effort and dedication they gave to the program, as well as my assistant coaches.  I would also like to thank the students and teachers of Springfield High School for their support over the past ten years.  I wish the program nothing but good luck in the coming years."

District 186 coordinator of Public Relations Bree Hankins replied to a text message seeking further comment.

"We have received his resignation effective immediately as head boys' basketball coach. He will still retain his full teaching position at Springfield High School. We are taking next steps to secure an interim head coach for the remainder of the season. We are doing everything possible to ensure a smooth transition for our student athletes."

Reed became the boys basketball coach at Springfield High before the 2005-06 season. There is a District 186 school board meeting on Monday night.
