They said this was the year the War on 4 would finally live up to the hype, but they were wrong. Friday's 35-28 overtime North Mac win met that hype and crushed it, becoming one of the best Sangamo games in the conference's history.
It featured an hour and 20 minute delay for lightning, a final minute score to tie the game, a 53 yard field goal at the end of regulation that hit the crossbar and an overtime walk-off interception by a lineman. There were eight total turnovers and more momentum swings than Shane Owsley has given powerful post game speeches this season. And he's given a lot.
North Mac (4-0) never trailed but with :29 seconds left in regulation, Auburn (1-3) tied the game at 28 when Drew Chance found Ben Johnson in the endzone and then found him again for the two point conversion.
With half a minute remaining, North Mac marched to the Auburn 36 yard line, where Brennan White attempted a 53 yard field goal that hit the crossbar as regulation expired.
North Mac took the ball first in overtime and Asa Donaldson quickly pounded the rock into the endzone, giving the Panthers a 35-28 lead. On third and goal from the 15, Drew Chance was intercepted for the fourth time of the evening. Zach Snow hauled in a pass tipped by Griffin Hatalla, securing North Mac's first win over Auburn in school history.
