Loggers Drop First MWAC Matchup At Home


 

The Lincoln Land women’s basketball team hosted #7 Illinois Central on Saturday afternoon. The Loggers had one bad quarter which cost them a 71-60 loss.
Both teams came ready to play which lead to a competitive 18-17 ICC lead to start the game. Kayla Kodat and Avrie Schmidt provided a balanced Logger attack with 4 points a piece. Six Loggers scored in the frame but still trailed by 1 point.The second period was the turning point in the contest. Lincoln Land had a three minute stretch where they struggled offensively against the ICC zone defense. This allowed ICC to outscore Lincoln Land 19-10 for a 37-27 halftime advantage. Marley Smith and Avrie Schmidt both had four points in the quarter.The second half turned out to be evenly played by both teams. The Logger offense woke up, lead by Addison Scarlette’s 6 points. Madison Lovett buried a three point basket as Lincoln Land scored 18 points in the third. However, ICC was able to keep pace by scoring 18 points as well. Entering the final frame down 10 points, the Loggers were able to cut the lead down to a 2 possession game with 5:30 remaining in the game. Addison Scarlette was the offensive catalyst for Lincoln Land in the fourth. She knocked down a three point basket and had an ‘and one’ to go along with a two point field goal for eight points. Marley Smith added five points in the quarter as well.Unfortunately, Lincoln Land had to foul late which lead to eight points in free throws for ICC. The Loggers finished the quarter scoring 15 points while ICC finished with 16 for a 71-60 victory.Marley Smith finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Addison Scarlette went for 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 ass. Avrie Schmidt had 12 points and 4 rebounds. Cassidy Kretschmer and Kirsten Taylor pulled down 6 and 5 rebounds respectively.
Lincoln Land dropped to 12-4 and 1-1 in conference play.  The Loggers continue conference play as they host John Wood Wednesday, January 25 at 5:30pm.
