The 2016 Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year from Rochester High School has a lot to celebrate this week. The junior at the University of Louisville will play in the super regional on Friday as the Cardinals look for a trip to the College World Series in Omaha. On Tuesday, Fitzgerald was drafted in the 2019 MLB draft in the fourth round,  116th overall by the San Francisco Giants.

That place in the draft comes with a slot value of $497,500. Fitzgerald was drafted in 2016 in the 30th round with the 898th pick by the Boston Red Sox. Fitzgerald elected to attend Louisville instead and in 2017 made 36 starts and played in 48 games finishing with a .208 batting average and 11 RBI.

In Fitzgerald’s sophomore season as a Cardinal, he played in all 64 games, starting 63 of them and finished with a .264 batting average including 17 doubles, 24 RBIs, 57 runs scored and 23 stolen bases in 24 attempts.
