Max Thuma scored the game’s first goal and the game’s last goal to lift Springfield High to a 2-1 win over Mattoon in the 2A sectional semifinal and push the Solons into the Maroa-Forsyth sectional championship on Friday night.
Thoma scored eight minutes into the contest to pu the Senators on top but Alex Lensick scored the equalizer for the Green Wave before the half. With 23 minutes to play, Thuma scored from about 30 yards out to give Springfield High the victory.
The Senators will play Friday night at 7 p.m. at Maroa-Forsyth against the winner of Jacksonville and Champaign Central who play on Wednesday evening in the other semifinal.
