Lucas Western (Pleasant Plains Football) – No Samson? No problem. Lucas Western stepped in as the featured running back for the Cardinals after the departure of senior Nik Samson and showed exactly what Cardinals fans had seen flashes of last season. Western ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns on the way to a 21-6 win over PORTA at home Week 1.
Justin Wright (Taylorville Football) – Tornadoes wide receiver Justin Wright and quarterback Brandon Odam put up video game numbers in their junior season together last year, so what do they have in store for us this season? Well, they got off on the right foot in a 20-8 win over Mt. Vernon. Wright caught four passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns in the win, and we’re sure he’s got plenty more in store this season.
Chris Pulley (Jacksonville Football) – A year after going 0-9, the Crimsons didn’t take long to flip the switch in Week 1 against Eisenhower. Sophomore running back Chris Pulley was a big contributor to that, tallying 140 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Tor’jon Evans (Eisenhower Football) – The highly-touted Evans trio transferring into Decatur Eisenhower have a lot to prove in the CS8, but running back Tor’jon Evans didn’t take long to flash his abilities in Week 1 against Jacksonville. Evans racked up 134 yards on the ground, with much of that coming on an 80 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Riley Lewis (Rochester Football) – The senior wide receiver might be small in stature, but he came up huge for the Rockets in their opener against Southeast. Lewis caught six passes for 137 yards to help pace the Rocket offense on Friday, giving new quarterbacks Clay Bruno and Brock Mackiney a consistent target to find in the passing game as Rochester easily dispatched of Southeast 35-8.
Nic Laird (Athens Football) – Junior running back Nic Laird was special last season, but with All-stater Drayton Davis out of the picture, Laird now has primary ball carrier duties. He handled them about as you would expect if you’ve seen him play. Laird ran for 127 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown against a tough Williamsville front.
Ian Benner (Maroa-Forsyth Football) – The junior quarterback was very, very impressive in his sophomore season, but the Trojans are looking for Benner to take the next step. Friday night against North Mac he showed more of that progression, passing for 219 yards and throwing two touchdowns, while adding 37 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground.
Destin Chance (Auburn Football) – A PTP regular, Destin Chance was right back at it in Week 1 against New Berlin. Chance threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns, adding 54 yards on the ground. Most importantly, however, the senior quarterback stepped in at safety on New Berlin’s final drive with the Trojans leading by just 6 and secured the win with a game-sealing interception in the final seconds.
Jacob Milnes (Rochester S) – The senior Rocket attacker has been off to a great start for the Rockets, netting two goals against Southeast in a 5-0 win to open up Rochester’s CS8 slate, then following that up with a hat trick against non-conference opponent Williamsville in a 7-1 win later in the week. The Rockets are off to a roaring start and the senior has been a hug part of their offensive explosion.
