Prime Time Performer: February 12 – 17

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Mariah’s Restaurant.

Trey Hild (PORTA Wrestler) If you don’t know why Trey Hild deserves your vote then you probably aren’t familiar with our website. We’ve been right there with Hild the last four years in which he’s finished second place in the state three times. On Saturday, he returned home a state champion in his last high school match, finishing his career with a record of 190-14.

Levi Vorreyer (Glenwood Diver) The swimmers and divers got some video love on Saturday at sectionals and we’re continuing that this week by nominating Glenwood freshman Levi Vorreyer for Prime Time Performer. The Titans diver won the sectional with a score of 451.3 and is headed to state.

Nick Capriotti (Rochester Wrestler) Three months ago, Nick Capriotti was celebrating his third football state championship in his high school career. On Saturday, Capriotti made school history by becoming the first ever Rochester wrestler to medal at the state tournament and stand on the podium. Cappy the running back headed to Wisconsin-Platteville next year finished sixth in the state in Class 2A at 195 pounds.

Amir Brummett (MacArthur Guard) We enter the final week of the regular season in which we get to see the Brummett twins tear it up on the court. MacArthur’s brother combination has blessed us with incredible highlights and Big Nasties for four years now and they continue to impress each and every game. Amir Brummett gets the nod this week after his insane stat line which help the Generals knock off the #1 ranked team in Class 3A. Amir Brummett had 25 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals against Southeast.

Austin O’Donoghue (Lincoln Wrestler) As we watched the wrestling careers of quite a few seniors end this weekend, we can remain optimistic about the future of the sport in our area thanks to guys like Austin O’Donoghue. Two weeks ago, “Lil Savage OD” became the first ever wrestler in school history to qualify for state as a freshman and he added to that accomplishment last Thursday when he became the first freshman to ever win a match at state. We look forward to seeing Austin for the next few years.

Peyton Boudouris (Rochester Guard) Ask anybody who’s a fan of girls basketball in central Illinois and they’ll know about Rochester. This season, the young Rockets have grown up quickly and look where they are….back in sectionals this week. She may be the coach’s daughter, but she’s also a shooter as we saw on Thursday. Peyton Boudouris led the way with 21 points, including five three’s against Bloomington Central Catholic.

Asya Smith (Plains Guard) We’ve raved about her all season long and she’s still only a freshman. Pleasant Plains plays for a trip to state on Monday and a big reason they’ve gotten this far is Asya Smith. She scored a game high 16 points in the sectional title game against Auburn and had five points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals in the sectional semifinal against Alton Marquette.

Matrice Brooks (Lanphier Guard) Not many outside of the North Side would’ve given the Lions much a chance last week, but Lanphier is still alive. Doug Collins was rather emotional after the regional championship win and for good reason. Lanphier beat SHG in the regional title game led by Matrice Brooks who scored 18 points.

Kenzie Decker (Glenwood Guard) Surprisely enough, we’ve got a few freshman landing on the Prime Time Performer list this week and one of them calls Chatham home. Freshman guard Kenzie Decker came off the bench against Springfield High and knocked down the biggest shot of her career so far. Decker’s three pointer gave the Titans the lead in overtime and Glenwood continued that momentum into a sectional this week.

Ryan Nevill (Williamsville Forward) Williamsville had the opportunity to lock up the Sangamon conference title on their home court last week and with about 25 seconds left…that looked in jeopardy. Ryan Nevill took over and somehow, someway, the Bullets escaped with a win over Riverton. Nevill got a steal and knocked down a three, and then got another steal on the inbounds play and assisted the game winner to Griffin Keebler.

Stepheon Sims (Southeast Guard) Seems like every week we come up with a new player from Southeast who’s deserving of a Prime Time Performer selection. This week, there was no doubt after Stepheon Sims hit the game winner in overtime against Glenwood. He had a game high 14 points in that one and is probably really looking forward to having his backcourt buddy back in the lineup this week in Terrion Murdix.

Carson Reese (New Berlin Guard) New Berlin’s defense deserves some attention after holding Pleasant Plains scoreless for the final 12 minutes of the game. As the clock wound down, it was Carson Reese’s steal and three point play that locked up a Pretzel victory on the road against the Cardinals.
