Prime Time Performer: Holiday Tournament Edition

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Mariah’s Restaurant.

Anthony Fairlee (Southeast Forward) Anthony Fairlee brought two trophies home on Saturday night. The Spartans dynamic dunker was named tournament MVP at the Prairie Farms Classic in Collinsville and the entire team earned the first place trophy by beating the Kahoks 68-56, the school’s first ever Collinsville tourney title.

Joseph Mitchell (Williamsville Forward) The Bullets finally got to celebrate a Christmas tourney title! All tournament team selection Joseph Mitchell was a big reason why Williamsville marched through the bracket and got the win over Peoria Quest in the title game on Saturday. J-Mitch had 30 points against Midwest Central in the opener and continued to be a focal point against the rest of their opponents.

Drayton Davis (Athens Forward) Drayton Davis the dunker was plenty more than that in the Waverly Holiday Tournament. About four inches to the right and he would’ve had an epic game winning three to give the Warriors the title. Instead, Davis had to settle for second place for the Athens in back to back seasons at one of the best small school tournaments in the state. The all tournament team selection brought the crowd to their feet on numerous occasions last week…peep Big Nasty if you don’t believe us.

Isaiah Bowers (Lincoln Forward) If not for Southeast, Lincoln would probably have headed north from Collinsville with the first place trophy on Saturday. Instead the Railsplitters had to settle for third place, as they beat MacArthur led by senior Isaiah Bowers, who poured in 23 in that game and earned himself a spot on the all tournament team as well.

Herb McMath (Lanphier Forward) Lanphier wasn’t able to pull off the three-peat in Pekin last Friday night, but they got to the title game thanks to the big man in the middle. Junior Herb McMath has slowly and steadily become a solid option for Blake Turner inside and McMath proved that with 17 points and 8 boards against Centennial in the semifinals.

Ozzy Erewele (Springfield Guard) The Springfield High girls got tripped up in Bloomington by St. Ignatius but we can’t ignore the performance that Ozzy Erewele put up against Mahomet-Seymour. The track star is becoming a force on the hardwood as well, putting up 24 points and 15 rebounds against the Bulldogs.

Hank Hayer (Lutheran Guard) Lutheran High improved on their consolation championship crown in 2016 by bringing home fifth place in Waverly this year. They were led by junior point guard Hank Hayer who led the tourney in points scored, averaging just under 21 points per game.

Trey Hild (PORTA Wrestler) There’s no secret about PORTA wrestling. Jeff Hill has one of the best 1A programs in the state and some incredible wrestlers and teams have been through the Bluejay wrestling program. A new name sits at the top of the career wins list as of last week. Trey Hild has earned that spot, surpassing the 159 win mark only halfway through his senior season.

Ashlyn Sturdy (Tri-City Guard) In terms of small school girls point guards, we are ready to put Tri-City sophomore Ashlyn Sturdy in the conversation with the best of them. Sturdy led the Tornadoes to their fifth straight holiday tournament championship crown, beating Mt. Pulaski, and she earned a spot on the all tournament team. Sturdy is currently averaging 20 points, 6 boards, 4 assists and 6 steals per game.

Hannah Smith (Auburn Guard) She was out sick when the Trojans hosted Tri-City and lost a close one. If Hannah Smith had played, it would’ve been an even better game considering her performance in the Riverton girls holiday tournament. Smith scored 21 points against Midwest Central and led the way with 24 against Hillsboro in the title game.

Makenzie Bray (Glenwood Forward) We’re starting to run out of ways to describe all the things that Glenwood’s Makenzie Bray can do with the basketball. The Titans’ senior scored 24 points and grabbed 14 boards against Canton and then in the consolation title game….her team scored 50 points and she had 34 of them to go with 11 rebounds against Bloomington.
