Prime Time Performer: September 18th – 23rd

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Mariah’s Restaurant.

Spencer Redd (SHG Wide Receiver) His head coach talks about him being this year’s MVP. Cyclone wide receiver Spencer Redd is so much more than just a pass catcher. On Friday, it took him just 11 seconds to find the end zone returning the opening kickoff for an 85 yard score. Later in the second quarter, Redd was in the backfield running the wildcat and found the end zone for a rushing touchdown.

Hunter Thompson (Williamsville Wide Receiver) The Bullets have a lot of options. That’s no secret at this point in the season. Justice has a some excellent choices to get the rock to and this week it was Hunter Thompson. The speedy senior WR had three receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown had 230 yards of total offense, including 179 through the air.

Dalton Bringle (Southeast Defensive Back) The East Side stood up this week and picked up their first victory. It was a junior on defense that made some big plays to spark the Spartans to a win. Dalton Bringle had a pick six in the first half and then another interception in the fourth quarter to slow down the Panthers’ late game comeback charge.

Destin Chance (Auburn Quarterback) It’s finally time. Destin Chance, welcome to the list of elite quarterbacks in the Sangamo and welcome to the PTP list. The Trojans junior play caller had another incredible night on his home field and this time he got the dub as well. Chance had five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown but most importantly kept Auburn’s playoff hopes alive.

Cole Hembrough (Glenwood Tight End) His head coach called him “a man”. His teammate called him “a beast”. There was no question that Cole Hembrough was the MVP on Friday night’s most exciting game in the CS8. The senior tight end had five catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Glenwood’s other score in the win over Springfield? A 60 yard kickoff return from Hembrough as time expired in the first half. College coaches should be taking notes.

Jayden Reed (Rochester Wide Receiver) The Rockets are 5-0 heading into the tough stretch of their season. While Nic Baker had another ho-hum night with three touchdown passes, we’re nominating Jayden Reed for the PTP. He’s probably considered second on the WR target list behind Cade Eddington at this point, but Baker needs a lot of options if this team is going to repeat as the 4A state champs. Reed had 3 catches for 51 yards against Jacksonville and two of them went for scores.

Mary Helen Healy (SHG Volleyball) Doing the dirty work doesn’t get you into highlights very often when it comes to volleyball, so we’re shining the Prime Time Performer light on the Cyclones’ libero. Mary Helen Healy is a big reason why SHG volleyball is at the top of the CS8 this season and why they won their third straight City title on Thursday. Healy had over 40 digs in three City games.

Kelby Phillips (Springfield High Forward) You’ll see him over in Plays of the Week for what he did last Tuesday. Kelby Phillips scored a hat trick against the Senators biggest soccer rival, including the golden goal just two minutes into the first overtime. If you haven’t seen the golden locks play live yet this season, go do it.

Ryan Gustafson (North Mac Forward) Speaking of soccer studs, there’s one out at North Mac. Ryan Gustafson scored 14 goals last week, bringing his season total to 29. He led his Panthers to a 4-0-1 record last week with five goals against Lebanon, two goals and an assist against Pana, two goals against Williamsville, two goals against Metro East and three goals against Mount Pulaski.

Sydney Huffman (Southeast Runner) There’s no doubt that the CS8 is filled with very talented runners. The Spartans have one named Sydney Huffman and showed proved it again on Saturday at the Springfield High Invite, taking second place with a time of 19:16. Watch for her name in the coming weeks as we gear up for the postseason.

Coldin Calvert (Williamsville Golfer) Not necessarily known as a powerhouse in the County for golf, the Bullets showed last week that has changed. Coldin Calvert led the Bullets to their first ever Boys County golf title. Calvert earned medalist honors, shooting a 75 at Lincoln Greens, needing a birdie to seal the deal on the 18th hole.
