Prime Time Performer: September 11th – 16th

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Mariah’s Restaurant.

Nic Baker (Rochester Quarterback) Guess who’s back? We made up an excuse to keep Nic Baker off the list last week, even though he probably deserved it. Baker made sure he got himself nominated again this week with a pretty impressive show on turf. He had five passing touchdowns, one rushing score, 78 yards on the ground and 250 in the air. Another day at the office for the Rocket gunslinger.

Cam Jones (Springfield High Wide Receiver) There’s no secret about the talent that Springfield High has on the football field and probably the biggest offense threat is only a junior. Cam Jones has been finding the endzone in the CS8 for three years already and on Friday he did it four more times. Jones had 66 rushing yards, 97 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown.

Matt Brenneisen (SHG Fullback) Speaking of juniors who we have no doubt will be playing at the next level in three years….the Cyclones have a guy who does a little bit of everything. The guy who led the conference in tackles last year as a sophomore linebacker is now getting touches on offense. Against Glenwood on Friday, Matty B had a rushing and receiving touchdown and even a fumble recovery on defense.

Brandon Odam (Taylorville Quarterback) The Tornadoes quarterback is well overdue to get the Prime Time Performer nomination. He’s already had an incredible season, setting school records and helping Justin Wright set a new state receiving record. On homecoming night last Friday, Odam had 73 rushing yards and one score on the ground, to go with 219 passing yards and two TD’s through the air.

Izaiha Johnson (MacArthur Running Back) We already know all about the Brummetts and what they bring to the field each week, but the Generals are way more than the twins this season. Their number one running back, Izaiha Johnson showed out against Jacksonville in Week 4, putting up 209 yards on the ground and three touchdowns as the Generals stayed undefeated.

Nic Laird (Athens Running Back) All of the hype in the Sangamo is focused on Williamsville and something tells me the Warriors are fine with flying under the radar right now. Athens is still undefeated and they have a running back that is becoming a serious force in that backfield. Drayton Davis will be gone next season but Nic Laird will be running over defenders for the next two years. Laird had 149 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just six touches against Auburn.

DJ Mumaw (Williamsville Linebacker) Yes, the Bullets are very good. Their offense is ridiculous and Justice Ferrier is probably a Prime Time Performer every week. Last week, it was Williamsville’s defense that impressed and the leader on that side of the ball is DJ Mumaw. The linebacker had 12 tackles, 3 for loss, one forced fumble and one sack and helped the Bullets shut down that North Mac run game.

Rylee Claton (Glenwood Forward) The top team is the Central State Eight so far this season has been Glenwood and there’s a big game on Tuesday to shake some things out in the conference. Watch for Rylee Claton if you see the Titans play. Certainly not the biggest guy on the field but his touch is something special. Claton had two goals and an assist against QND and then assisted on the game’s first goal against SHG.

Cassidy Dooley (Rochester Volleyball) The Rocket volleyball team had a pretty good showing at the Ray Long Pretzel Classic, bringing home the first place trophy. Rochester is led by Cassidy Dooley who earned the most valuable player award at the New Berlin tournament. The lefty does a little bit of everything on that team and will keep them competitive in the CS8 for the rest of the season as they await their shot at SHG in a couple weeks.

Danny McCloud (New Berlin Running Back) The Pretzels are continuing to climb after falling to 0-2 to start the season. They’ve started to beat the teams we thought they should and that means New Berlin is gaining confidence. The ground game for Trevor Compardo is in the hands of Danny McCloud, who is a great combination of speed and power. At Pittsfield on Friday, McCloud had two scores on the ground and racked up 193 yards….all in the first half.

Ajonte Lee (Lanphier Quarterback) The most exciting game of the week in the CS8 in Week 4 was out in Decatur where the Eisenhower Panthers had a comfortable lead on the visiting Lions before Ajonte Lee brought them roaring back. The dual threat QB had 140 rushing yards, 3 rushing and one receiving touchdown and even scored game winner with less than two minutes to go.

Reid Taylor (SHG Golfer) He was in third place after the first day of the boys City golf tournament but came back in the final two days to run away with the medalist honors. Sophomore Reid Taylor won his second straight boys City golf tournament with a four over par, winning by seven strokes and leading the Cyclones to victory.
