Prime Time Performer: May 1st – 6th

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Mariah’s Restaurant.

Josh Bormida (Morrisonville Baseball) Last week we had Mohawk pitcher Adam Deal on the list and then his teammate had to go and one up him. Josh Bromida showed that Morrisonville has a one-two punch on the mound by throwing a no-hitter against Tri-City in a 10-0 win. He not only pitched a gem, but he also hit a grand slam to help his cause.

Sep Mattera (Plains Baseball) The Cardinals can lock up a conference title tonight (Monday) against Maroa-Forsyth. A big reason why they got to that point was Sep Mattera who had a great couple days at the plate. Mattera had three hits and two RBI in Plains’ win over Illini Central on Thursday. He followed that up with a grand slam and a total of 5 RBI against the Bullets on Friday night.

Reid Detmers (Glenwood Baseball) Guess who’s back? Reid Detmers struck out 18 Rockets in his one-hitter on Tuesday. The Louisville commit also drew a walk that scored a run in Glenwood’s 4-1 win. Out of the 21 outs recorded by the Titans, Detmers caused all but three by way of the K. If you haven’t seen him pitch in person yet this season, find time to do so.

Kahlil Wassell (New Berlin Track) Hampered by a foot injury for much of the season to this point, Kahlil Wassell is rounding into form at the right time. At the Sangamon County track meet, Wassell came home with first place finishes in the 100 (11.31), in the 200 (22.79), the 400 (51.34) and finally helped the Pretzels’ 4×100 relay team win as well.

Payton Long (Williamsville Softball) We’ve had a few pitchers on the PTP list that continue to make it hard to keep them off. See Detmers for example. On the softball side of things, Williamsville has a reoccurring candidate. Payton Long pitched a no-hitter against Auburn on Monday, striking out nine and only walking one Trojan. She followed that up on Friday by pitching a complete game shutout against Plains.

Katie Juhlin (Glenwood Soccer) The Lady Titans had one heck of a week, beating Rochester in overtime and then coming back to beat Springfield High and lock up the CS8 soccer crown. Running the midfield for the Titans this season is senior Katie Juhlin and she came up big with two assists against the Senators.

Ben Johnson (Auburn Baseball) The Trojans have looked for their go-to guy on the mound all season after losing Tristan Weaver to graduation after he took them on their long playoff run. The quarterback Ben Johnson has emerged as the guy to get the ball in big games. Johnson got the win over Williamsville on the road last week, with the wind blowing out. He struck out seven Bullets and helped the Trojans pick up a huge win.

Alli Morley (Plains Track) Pleasant Plains track and field has been dominating meets all season long, both boys and girls. The Cardinals have a speedster in Alli Morley who returned home from the Sangamon County meet with four first place finishes. Morley crossed the finish line first in the 100, 200 and anchored the winning 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams.

Jadyn Zaffiri (Rochester Softball) Still undefeated, the Rochester softball team continues to run through the conference thanks to their depth. Up and down the lineup, the Rockets send girls to the dish who can come through in the clutch. Jadyn Zaffiri was the one last week who came up big. She hit a RBI single in the fourth inning against Glenwood that proved to be the game winner.

Matt Helm (New Berlin Baseball) The biggest shakeup in the Sangamo this season came last week when the Pretzels sent Marao-Forsyth home with their first conference loss. The guy most responsible for knocking around Braden Willoughby was Matt Helm, who went 3 for 3 with a home run and a double, driving in three runs. Helm also came in and get the save in New Berlin’s 7-6 win.

Jarius Jackson (Lanphier Track) While the Lions didn’t win City, they did have plenty of guys show out. Jarius Jackson won the 100 and the 200 for the Lions. Jackson ran the 100 in a time of 11.25 and ran the 200 in a time of 22.91. We’ll see if he can follow up that performance this week at the CS8 meet.

Will Elvers (SHG Baseball) The Cyclones continue to keep the pressure on the Glenwood Titans at the top of the CS8. The pitching is there and if SHG can continue to hit, they’re going to continue to run through the conference. Will Elvers has been on a terror at the plate, going 3 for 3 against Plains with a triple and a double, driving in three. Elvers followed that up with another 3 for 3 day against Lanphier, driving in two runs and hitting another double.
