Prime Time Performers: April 3rd – 8th

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

Sepp Mattera (Pleasant Plains pitcher) Dave Greer has plenty of options on the bump this season. He’s got two lefties that can sit you down in a hurry and one of them is Sepp Mattera. On Friday night he struck out ten and gave up just two hits in the Cardinals’ win over Nokomis. Sepp also drove in a run to lock up the win in that one.

Olivia Felts (Williamsville Pitcher) Having one really good pitcher is a luxury in softball. Mindy Ashbaugh has two REALLY good pitchers. After their win at North Mac, Olivia Felts called herself and Payton Long the “Dynamic Duo” and it certainly fits. ‘Liv gets the nod for PTP this week with five innings of two hit, shut-out ball against North Mac in an important conference win. She also blasted a home run about a country mile against Warrensburg-Latham on Friday night.

Brooklyn Blackwell (Pleasant Plains Forward) Soccer teams need a good goalie and a good defense, but most importanly, they need players that have a knack for finding the back of the net. At this point in the season, teams know who Brooklyn Blackwell is for Pleasant Plains and yet, she continues to score at a ridiculous rate. Blackwell scored four goals against two conference foes last week, four against Williamsville and four against Riverton. Good luck guarding her!

Dawson Gibson (Jacksonville Baseball) Stuck in a pitchers duel last week, all it took was one swing of the bat to win the game. Jacksonville’s Dawson Gibson hit a clutch RBI double in the sixth inning that turned out to be the games’ only run. Gibson’s hit helped the Crimsons beat Rochester 1-0. Later in the week, Gibson went 4 for 4 in a game against Highland with two runs batted in. What we’re saying is….this kid can hit.

Reid Detmers (Glenwood baseball) After throwing back to back no-hitters to start the CS8 season, we figured there’s no way that Detmers can improve on that right? We’ll be able to put someone else in Prime Time Performer. Not so fast. Detmers actually did something better. The Louisville lefty threw four innings of perfect baseball and struck out 11 of the 12 batters he faced. Then on Friday he came in and got the save in a close win for the Titans against Normal West. Tune in next week for another episode of….what Detmers did now!

Jake Shea (SHG Baseball) Don’t look now, but the Cyclones are starting to really find a groove. SHG baseball gets a look this week at Jake Shea who came through with a big hit against Edwardsville. Shea smacked a walk off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Tigers for a big Cyclone victory. Earlier in the week, Shea went 2 for 4 at the dish against Normal West in SHG’s 5-0 victory.

Katie Cochran (Rochester Soccer) It’s been documented that Rochester girls soccer has won back to back state titles. But they also lost a ton of talent from last year’s lineup. This year though, the Rockets are starting to figure things out quickly. One of their scorers stepping up this year in the midfield is Katie Cochran who scored a huge goal last year in the state title game. Cochran netted two goals against U-High on Saturday after scoring the go-ahead goal against Jacksonville earlier in the week.

Katie Elmore (Lutheran High Soccer) We’ve seen Lutheran High’s Katie Elmore on the Prime Time Performer list quite a bit this school year, for volleyball and basketball. This spring, it looks like she belongs back in the running. We’re going to call her Katie “Hat Trick” Elmore. The senior striker had three hat tricks last week: three goals against Athens, Macomb and Beardstown.
