Prime Time Performers: Sept. 28th – Oct. 3

Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!

Dane Moats & Garrett Gillette (Pawnee Quarterback-Wide Receiver) Moats and Gillette linked up twice on two beautiful plays for scores of 22 and 17 yards for the Pawnee Indians on Saturday. Coach Thein is known for the ground and pound run game, but with the Moats and Gillette combo clicking, the Indians are a very scary team for 1A opponents.

Sam Sergent and Tristan Blair (SHG running backs)  The Sacred Heart Griffin air assault is definitely worth the price of admission with wide receiver targets like Albert Okwuegbunam and Sam Bonansinga but the ground game for the Cyclones will have to pave the way as the Friday nights get colder if Coach Leonard’s boys can three-peat. The combo of Sam Sergent and Tristan Blair found pay dirt four times against Glenwood this week.

Mike McNicholas (Rochester Defensive Lineman) Not many of the Rochester starters played a full half on Friday night but there were plenty of options for Prime Time Performers from the Rocket lineup. This week’s selection is sophomore Mike McNicholas who may not get much recognition for causing havoc on opposing quarterbacks and punters but McNicholas is a defensive terror that will surely be a staple in the CS8 for two more years. McNicholas scored a touchdown on a blocked punt against Lincoln in the first quarter on Friday.

James White (Jacksonville Wide Receiver) Quarterback Joe Brannan is certainly as deserving as James White for Prime Time Performer of the week from Coach Grounds’ group, but we’re going with White because he’s been putting up consistent numbers all year as arguably the best wide receiver in the CS8. White caught seven passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. White got his third TD on Friday with a 80 yard kickoff return for a score.

Gavin Webb (Southeast WR/DB) Is there any doubt who deserves the nomination from the East Side this week? Gavin Webb did just about everything except sell corn dogs on Friday night at Memorial Stadium as the Spartans picked up a much needed third win. Webb scored three times and had three interceptions. He caught a TD, scored on a pick six and scooped up a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown in Southeast’s big win over their rival Senators.

Nick Metzger (Glenwood striker) The Glenwood Titans are a perfect 6-0 in the Central State Eight this year heading into their big matchup with also undefeated Springfield High on Tuesday night. A big reason why they have an unblemished mark in conference play is Nick Metzger. The Titan scored both of Glenwood’s goals on Tuesday night in a huge 2-1 win over SHG on the road.

Clayton Luker (SHG golfer) They call him Jordan Speith on the west campus…okay, not quite but the Cyclone golfer has done some pretty impressive things this year much like the young golfer who took over the world this summer named Speith. Luker completed the Big Three this week by winning the Central State Eight conference tournament on Thursday, just five days after taking home the Sangamon County crown and about a month after winning the Boys City Tournament. Luker shot a 74 on Thursday for a one stroke win in the CS8 tourney.

Leah Musselman (Williamsville setter) The Bullet big guns get all the glory and while they certainly deserve a lot for their jaw dropping kills, it would all be for not without Williamsville setter Leah Musselman. Williamsville won the County title with a two set sweep over Rochester last week and Musselman tallied 23 assists, including 14 to Abbey Galusha.

Joey Crossin (New Berlin lineman) Quarterback Cam Cummings was responsible for plenty of scores for the Pretzels in their big win over Pleasant Plains, but Cummings gets a lot of credit and has been nominated for PTP multiple times. It’s time for Joey Crossin to get his moment in the spotlight after the lineman plowed his way into the end zone for a touchdown against the Cardinals on Friday night.

Auburn’s Offensive Line – The Trojans put up seven touchdowns, including four from running back Ryan McLaughlin against Porta on Friday night. Any running back will tell you that they can’t do anything without their offensive line so it’s time for the boys in the trenches to get some credit from Auburn. The line also allowed quarterback Drew Chance time to throw two more touchdowns to Drew Points against the Bluejays.

Brennan White (North Mac Quarterback) Believe it or not, Brennan White hasn’t been on our Prime Time Performer list. If there’s anyone more deserving in the area, we’d love to hear it. The Panther play caller has done it all this season leading his team to a 6-0 record and continued to do so on Friday night against Athens. White rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns, while passing for 238 yards and two touchdowns against the Warriors.

Blake Heimsness (Taylorville Quarterback) The Tornadoes are 6-0 and have been led all year offensively by Blake Heimsness. Taylorville’s staple this year is their stingy defense but you have to score to win games. Heimsness did that twice on Friday night against Effingham and that was enough as the Tornadoes won 14-7. Heimsness rushed for 64 yards and threw for 62 in the win.

John Antoine (Lutheran Midfielder)  The Lutheran High soccer team is quickly approaching 20 wins this season and that’s mainly because they just don’t give up goals, but they have only tied twice this year and that means the Crusaders have to score. Senior midfielder John Antoine netted the game’s only goal in LuHi’s 1-0 win over Southeast and he scored two goals in Lutheran’s 4-0 win over Pleasant Plains.
