Deron Powell State Farm Power Rankings: Week 5

CS8

1. SHG (4-0) – Is it week nine yet? The Cyclones continue to roll through the regular season with ease, causing CS8 fans to look forward to the Leonard Bowl. Coach Ken Leonard’s team didn’t even play a second half against MacArthur in week four due to weather and there’s a pretty good chance the starters won’t be playing in the second half this week either against Lincoln.

2. Rochester (4-0) – Getting Coach Derek Leonard is 100th career win last week was a big milestone and now the Rockets can focus on continuing to improve their defense. After Kenny Hedges and Dan Zeigler tore apart the Glenwood defense, there’s no reason to believe they can’t do the same to Southeast this week and keep Rochester unbeaten.

3. Jacksonville (3-1) – The only blemish on the Crimsons record is a running clock handed down by Sacred Heart-Griffin and there will be plenty of teams on that list this year. Joe Brannan showed off his ability to run the ball in week four, creating another thing defensive coordinators have to worry about when facing Coach Mark Grounds’ crew. Taking care of Springfield last week was a needed step but what they do against Eisenhower this week will determine where the Crimsons will stay in the Power Rankings.

4. Lanphier (2-2) –  A huge win in week four over city rival Southeast pushes the Lions up the Power Rankings List. Their losses are to Jacksonville and Rochester so far this year, neither are bad but beating Glenwood this week would really send a message. Reggie Dickerson is averaging over nine yards a carry and that’s basically on one leg.

5. Southeast (2-2) – The Spartans stumbled on homecoming night to city rival Lanphier but knocked off Glenwood the week before, leaving us wondering what Coach Lauber’s crew is capable of this year. A trip to Rochester in week five isn’t what the doctor ordered for Southeast after a tough loss either.

6. Glenwood (2-2) – Losing two straight home games has the Titans trying to get back on their feet heading into a virtual must-win at Lanphier in week five. A battle of the ground and pound against the Lions on Saturday night could put them right back where they need to be heading into the home stretch of the season.

7. Eisenhower (2-2) – The Panthers didn’t do anything to fall a spot in the rankings but beating Lincoln doesn’t push you up the ladder. If Dehority, who has already thrown for over 1000 yards and 14 touchdowns, can lead his high-flying offense to a win over Jacksonville this week…they will really send a message to central Illinois.

8. Springfield (1-3) – Roy Gully’s guys showed guts on Saturday morning against Jacksonville but couldn’t complete the comeback. The Senators can continue to grow in that triple option offense this week against the Generals at home and get their second win after losing three games to the top three teams in our power rankings.

9. MacArthur (0-4) After taking a beating from SHG, the Generals will have a shot to redeem themselves and get a possible win over Springfield but it’s looking like their matchup with Lincoln in week seven will be their best shot.

10. Lincoln (0-4) The Railsplitters finally put points on the board in week four. That’s a start.

Sangamo

1.  North Mac (4-0) – The new kings stay at the top…barely. The Panthers needed overtime to knock off their rivals in Auburn and what do they get for it? A date with Pleasant Plains for homecoming in the battle of the Sangamo unbeatens.
2. Pleasant Plains (3-1) – The Birds survived against the Bullets and Jacob Cronister now leads the area with an impressive 1,161 yards in the air. He’ll have to significantly add to that this week when the Cardinals continue their road tour at the best team in the Sangamo so far.

3. Williamsville (2-2) – Dropping back to back games means the sky is falling for the Bullets? Not quite. They still have the duel rushing attack of Vince Vignali and Jace Franklin, who both run with reckless abandon and will get a chance to get back into the win column against the Pretzels in week five.

4. Auburn (1-3) – Another week and another devastating defeat for Coach Bates’ boys. The Trojans have played with the best but haven’t been able to get it done in the end. Drew Chance has over 700 yards in the air this year and the Auburn Trojans will try to shoot down the Hawks in week five to get win number two.

5. Athens (3-1) –  The Warriors one loss came to Auburn but they’ve been able to beat up on everybody else they’ve played. Putting up over 60 against Pittsfield pads their stats and a non-conference date with LeRoy will hopefully get Nick Hanner and company to win number four in week five with the meat of their Sangamo schedule ahead of them.

6. New Berlin (3-1) – Another three win team behind Auburn and Williamsville? The Pretzels have their opportunity this week to jump up the power rankings with a date against the Bullets. If Cam Cummings and company can continue to win against Williamsville then the rest of the conference will certainly take notice.

7. Riverton (1-3) – The Hawks couldn’t hold down the Pretzels in the second half and that seems to be a theme. Riverton can hand the Trojans their fourth loss of the season and get a huge win for their confidence going forward in week five or they can continue to struggle against the conference’s top teams.

8. Pittsfield (0-4) – The Saukees took it on the chin against the Warriors last week but will get their chance for maybe their only win of the year when they play Porta this week.

9. Porta (0-4) – If there’s a win on the schedule this year for the Bluejays it has to start this week when they play Pittsfield.
