Prime Time Performers: Sept. 14th – 19th

Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!

Kelby Phillips (Springfield High soccer midfielder) – Whatever his dad/coach told him at halftime last Monday night worked. Phillips served up three perfect balls to Logan Willard in the second half against Jacksonville for three assists as the Senators blew the game wide open. Phillips added a goal on Friday night in Springfield’s tournament win. The sophomore soccer stud is a key piece to the Senator’s success this year and he continues to improve each and every week.

Clayton Luker (SHG golfer) – Luker wrapped up the City Golf Tournament title on Thursday afternoon at Bunn Golf Course after building himself a three shot lead heading into the final day. Luker took care of business, beating Bailey Gill by shooting a combined 107 over the three day event. Luker’s Cyclones also won the team championship by 13 strokes over Springfield High.

Maggie Sorenson (Williamsville volleyball) – There’s no doubt that Abbey Galusha and Delaney Edwards are the heavy hitters on the Bullets squad this year, but Maggie Sorenson is a major reason why the Williamsville volleyball has found success. Sorenson had 30 digs in the Bullets’ huge win over SHG on Monday and she added 20 digs in Williamsville’s third place win over Lincoln in the Mt. Pulaski Tournament.

Matthew Selinger (Athens Wide Receiver) – Nick Hanner’s favorite target on Friday night was wide receiver Matthew Selinger who caught three passes against Pittsfield and scored on two of them. Selinger tallied up 122 yards receiving, scored two touchdowns, including one that was an 85 yard TD pass. Selinger is one of many weapons for Athens, who continues to get better and better as the season goes on.

SHG’s Offensive Line – The Cyclones have entirely too many stars for the Prime Time Performer list every week, with an explosive offense that includes Sam Bonansinga, Timmy Brenneisen, Sam Sergent, Albert Okwuegbunam and the list goes on and on. But the one thing that keeps these weapons open and free to operate is the offensive line. The line helped kept Brenneisen clean and allowed Sergent to score twice, Bonansinga to score three times and SHG soared to a 48-0 win over MacArthur.

Kenny Hedges (Rochester Running Back) – Another week and another plus 50 point performance from the Rochester Rockets. Their running back found pay-dirt four times in the first half as Rochester dominated Glenwood and earned Coach Derek Leonard his 100th career win. Hedges’ numbers against the Titans included 23 carries for 113 yards. Hedges' dynamic run game forces defenses to respect the rush while their senior quarterback Dan Zeigler picks apart the secondary with weapons like Collin Stallworth, the Cox brothers and many more.

Logan McBride (Plains Linebacker) – Logan McBride’s hit on Williamsville’s Jace Franklin will go down in Pleasant Plains football history forever.  McBride hit Franklin and forced a fumble as the Bullets running back appeared to pick up a first down on 4th and 15 with time running down and Williamsville looking to take the lead back from Plains after a wild fourth quarter. McBride also recovered a fumble in the third quarter and simply seemed to be there on every big defensive play that Plains needed.

Zach Snow (North Mac Lineman) – The 4-0 Panthers wouldn’t be undefeated today without quite a few different North Mac players making big plays, but Snow was the one who put it on ice for the  Panthers who had the lead in overtime against Auburn on Friday night. Snow came up with an interception after Griffin Hatalla tipped a Drew Chance pass to seal the win for North Mac and continue the “Why Not Us?” mentality into week five with an unblemished record.

Joe Brannan (Jacksonville Quarterback) – Brannan knew he had to respond after Jacksonville suffered their week three loss to SHG. The “Cannon” showed off his legs this week with four rushing touchdowns against Springfield High and he threw for another. Brannan had 100 yards rushing and 196 yards in the air and he got the Crimsons back into the win column with their third W of the year.

Jordan Thousand (New Berlin Cornerback) – Thousand had an interception in the first half but came up even bigger in the second half for the Pretzels as his pick six gave New Berlin a three score lead to blow the game open against Riverton on Saturday. Thousand’s pick six was the nail in the coffin for the Hawks and it helped the Pretzels improve to 3-1 on the season.

Joe Varela (Lanphier Quarterback) – Nobody was sure if the Lions QB would get to play on Saturday until he was medically cleared late in the week. Luckily for Lanphier, Varela’s presence was just what they needed to spoil Southeast’s homecoming and get Coach Nixon’s squad back to 2-2 on the year and keep their playoff hopes alive. Varela went 9-14 for 113 yards and one touchdown in the air and even scored one on the ground to give the Lions some much needed momentum heading into the half.

Austin Galloway (Pawnee Running Back) – The Pawnee Indians powered their way to a 51-0 win over Mt. Olive on Friday night and in typical fashion it was their ground game that got it done. Galloway scored three touchdowns, tallying 119 yards on 15 carries in Pawnee’s big blowout conference win.

Jimmy Barry (Taylorville Defensive Back) – The Taylorville Tornadoes have started the year 4-0 again but this season it is mainly because of their defense. The starters on the defensive side of the ball have only allowed three touchdowns in four games this year. On Friday night, Taylorville dominated Salem 42-7 for their first conference win and it was senior defensive back Jimmy Barry who had a career night, collecting three interceptions.
