Prime Time Performer: Aug. 31- Sept. 5

Here are this week's candidates for the Antonio's Pizza Prime Time Performer. You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5pm. The winner will receive a $20 gift card to Antonio's Pizza!

Logan Willard (Springfield High Forward) – The Springfield High Senator led the charge against Rochester on Tuesday night in the early Central State Eight battle of a couple top teams. Willard netted the game’s only goal of the first half as Springfield won 3-1. He followed that up with a couple goals in Springfield’s 5-0 win over Granite City on Saturday.

Delaney Edwards (Williamsville Volleyball Striker) – An eight kill performance in the Bullet’s rivalry road game on Thursday evening puts Edwards on the list for the first time this year, but it probably won’t be the last. Not only did she help her team to a two set win over Plains, but Edwards also had 13 kills, nine digs and four aces in Williamsville’s comeback win over Mt. Pulaski on Tuesday.

Maddy Davis (Mt. Pulaski Middle Hitter) – The Louisiana Tech commit rebounded well from the Hilltoppers’ three set loss to Williamsville on Tuesday by dominating Athens with 11 kills in their two set win over Athens. Davis proved why she’s in the running for area volleyball player of the year.

Jacob Cronister & Logan McBride (Pleasant Plains QB/TE) – Cronister lit it up for the second consecutive week in Pleasant Plains’ statement 27-26 win on the road against Auburn. The senior signal caller has thrived in coach Brody Walworth’s new spread offense. Cronister shattered the school record for most yards in a game (453) and broke his own completions record (25) that he originally set against Riverton in week one (23). For good measure, Cronister added three touchdown passes to put him in position for PTP for the second consecutive week. Cronister didn't do it on his own though…Plains needed the ball back to have a chance to beat Auburn late in the fourth. McBride came up with the strip on the quarterback to get his Cardinals the ball back and they would score to beat the Trojans and improve to 2-0. That’s not all he did though, as he caught the game winning touchdown on the ensuing drive to bring his stat line up to 137 yards receiving on seven catches and two TD’s.

Tim Brenneisen (Sacred Heart Griffin Quarterback) – The junior has made his transition seem easy, taking over the starting quarterback role for a Cyclone team that was led by a division one player and all state quarterback the last three years. Brenneisen has quarterback in his blood, but he’s shown that he’s more than capable of putting up big numbers regardless of his targets. Brenneisen threw for five touchdowns against Eisenhower, picking up different targets with ease and showing his offense can put up points very quickly.

Kameron Corner (Glenwood DB/WR) – Most players who play both sides of the ball are more likely to score three touchdowns on offense rather than on defense. Not Glenwood’s Kameron Corner. He had two pick-six’s for the Titans on defense and added a fumble recovery for a touchdown to put up 18 points on his own from the defensive side of the ball as the Titans torched Lincoln for a 65-0 win.

Griffin Hatalla (North Mac RB) – All the talk in Virden, Girard and surrounding territory has been about their “Big Sexies” on both the offensive and defensive lines. But the Panthers still need someone to run behind those big boys. Griffin Hatalla took care of business on Friday against Pittsfield, rushing for three touchdowns in North Mac’s blowout win and he added a fumble recovery.

Kenny Hedges (Rochester RB) – There are plenty of worthy candidates from Rocket nation as the five time defending state champions have shown their ability to put up points in a hurry in their two opening games, dropping 79 on Eisenhower and 53 on Springfield High. Friday night, Kenny Hedges was one of the stars that shined brightest for Coach Leonard, getting 21 carries and rushing for 169 yards including three touchdowns. Zeigler, Cox, Stallworth and Hedges will give CS8 defensive coordinators nightmares all year long.

Klay Wood (Jacksonville LB/RB) – Playing on both sides of the ball in the Central State Eight’s game of the week, Klay Wood had himself quite a night on Springfield’s East Side. Wood’s list of accomplishments on Friday night including a pick six in the first half, a recovered fumble and two rushing touchdowns in the second half. Brannan, White and Rooney will get a lot of headlines this year and rightfully so…but Wood is a guy that the Crimsons will count on all year to put a check mark in the win column.

Reggie Dickerson (Lanphier RB) – The Lanphier Lions got back to their winning ways after a week one loss to Jacksonville and they did it with ground and pound. Almost half of their incredible 554 yards on the ground were from Lions’ running back Reggie Dickerson. He found pay dirt three times in Lanphier’s 50 point win over MacArthur.

Nick Hanner (Athens QB) – As a junior quarterback on a 2-0 team in the Sangamo, the pressure can sure get to you. But Nick Hanner has managed to keep the Warrior weapons in the win column the first two weeks. With a pesky Riverton team hanging tough in the fourth quarter, Hanner picked up a big first down with his legs and then went to one of his many targets in the air to salt the game away. Hanner’s real test comes in week three though, as the Warriors host an 0-2 Auburn team that is more than ready to get their first win.

Harrison Creswell (Williamsville WR/DB) – A 91 yard touchdown catch and run deserves some attention, but the Bullet big man came up with probably the biggest play of the week with the very tip of his finger on the last play of the game. Williamsville needed every inch of Creswell’s out-stretched finger to just tip the ball away on the last play of the game to prevent Breese Mater-Dei from scoring and beating the Bullets in their home non-conference game on Friday. Creswell had four catches for a 152 yards from Vignali.

Garrett Gillette (Pawnee WR) – Scoring the game winning touchdown on a kick return to start the second half certainly puts your name in the running for Prime Time Performer. Garrett Gillette did just that for the Pawnee Indians to put the boys in red and blue up 22-20 and their defense held for the rest of the game. Gillette also caught a 50 yard touchdown pass from Dane Moats in the first half, making him the Prime Time Performer candidate from Pawnee this week.

Parker Stokes (Taylorville DB) – The Taylorville defense held Limestone out of the end zone after the home team got a first and goal from the one with about 43 seconds left in the game, to preserve their 14-7 victory. Parker Stokes is a key cog in the Tornado D, that has allowed just three touchdowns in two games. Stokes had an interception and a fumble recovering against Bartonville-Limestone on Friday night and also came in for an injured quarterback Blake Heimsness and completed the only pass he threw for 30 yards to Cole Owens.

Cam Cummings (New Berlin QB) – Cam Cummings rushed for 71 yards on 21 carries and found the end zone three times in New Berlin's 34-6 trouncing of Petersburg Porta. The converted running back displayed his athleticism and showed that he has a knack for making plays through the air and on the ground. Coach Barry Creviston and the Pretzels have raved about his skill set as a playmaker. Cummings' ability to rush the football adds another dangerous element to the quarterback position that opposing teams will have to prepare for.
