State Championships Prove Elusive for Area Teams, But Plenty of Individual Finishes Have Area Athletes Leaving Happy

1A State Track

Caroline Jachino is just a sophomore, but that hasn’t stopped her from becoming one of the best distance runners in the entire state. Jachino finished 2nd in the 3200 run and 4th in the 1600 run. It’s scary to think that there’s so much more to come from this young Cardinal.

2A State Track

The Southeast Spartans were so very close to bringing home a team medal from Charleston. Serena Bolden powered her way to top three finishes in the long jump and the 100 meter dash plus a 4th place finish in the triple jump while Raven Moore added a 2nd place finish in the 400, but it wasn’t enough for Southeast to sneak into the top 3. They finished with 35 points as third place Urbana finished with 36.5. Rounding out 2A was the Martin twins from Eisenhower. Tina had quite the day, finishing 1st in the 100 and 200, while Katina had a 4th place finish in the 100.

3A State Track

Ozzy Erewele’s final day as a high school track star was a special one, even though she may not agree. Erewele finished tied for 2nd in the 100 meter dash, helped the 4×100 relay to an 8th place finish, took 9th in the long jump, and finished 7th in the 200 meter dash. Not too bad for competing in that many events twice in two days. Springfield High’s Lauren Ferguson added a 3rd place finish in the 300 low hurdles.
