Southeast Takes Shot At 3A Titan Morgan Park, But East Side Train Runs Out Of Steam In Title Game

Southeast trailed by six points in the final seconds of the third quarter in Saturday’s 3A State Championship game, but Illinois bound, five-star recruit Ayo Dosunmu launched a half court shot that hit nothing but net to beat the buzzer, pushing the lead to nine heading to the final frame. It was a play that was symbolic of the task the Spartans had on their hands in the title game.

Dosunmu’s 28 points led the Mustangs to their second consecutive state title and their fourth in the last six years. The 71-56 final capped Southeast’s first ever trip to the state tournament and a dream season on the city’s east side. Anthony Fairlee finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Terrion Murdix posted 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds in the loss. Fairlee, a first-team all stater and Murdix, who earned an honorable mention nod, despite missing a month with a broken hand, will both return for the Spartans next season.
