Prime Time Performers: March 20th – 25th

Here are this week’s candidates for Prime Time Performer.

You can vote once every 12 hours until the polls close on Friday at 5 p.m.

Aly Crum (Rochester Forward) Based on the first few times we’ve seen Rochester this season, we know they’ll be in the conversation to make another deep postseason run. Their defense is solid and midfield play is always there. One question mark coming in has been where is the scoring coming from…well Aly Crum is going to be the target up top. She netted a hat trick on Friday against the Bullets to show she’s more than capable of finding twine.

Becca Sauer (SHG Pitcher) We know they’ve got the power and the speed offensively, but in order to stay in games SHG needs a few solid pitchers. Bailey Morrow was the go-to coming in but Becca Sauer has stepped up as a solid second option. She pitched in relief on Tuesday and gave the Cyclones a chance to come back against Glenwood and then got the win against the Titans on Wednesday at home. #SauerStrong

Logan Tate (SHG First Baseman) Twenty-four hours after being no-hit in Chatham, the Cyclones could’ve given up knowing they were facing Maton on the mound. Instead, SHG hitters stepped up to the challenge, especially first baseman Logan Tate who drove in three runs with a double and a single. Tate’s day at the plate helped SHG earn a 4-1 win and split the season series with the Titans.

Katie Juhlin (Glenwood forward) Sometimes all it takes is one quick shot to qualify yourself for a Prime Time Performer nomination. Katie Juhlin’s moment just so happened to come with 13 seconds left in overtime against their rivals to help the Titans beat SHG 1-0 on the pitch. Juhlin’s late game heroics could have major implications in the CS8 standings throughout the rest of the season.

Reid Detmers (Glenwood pitcher) Glenwood’s Reid Detmers has seen some of the best competition in the batters box throughout his offseason, making the under 18 U.S. national team’s 40 man roster gave him some big opportunites. We’re not sure anyone expected him to make such a splash in his first CS8 game however. Detmers struck out 15 and threw a no-hitter in Glenwood’s 1-0 win over SHG on just 94 pitches. The Louisville commit is instantly must-see this spring.

Makai Gant (Southeast pitcher) Expectations are rising on the East Side after a solid start to the baseball season led by Makai Gant. The senior started the CS8 season with a bases loaded, walk off single to beat Rochester last Tuesday and was the winning pitcher, striking out eight batters and giving up just two hits. Gant also went 2 for 4 at the dish against Tri-City in a Spartans win later in the week.

T.J. Painter (Pleasant Plains pitcher) The Cardinals made their migration South for their annual trip to start the season and returned with an undefeated record. Plains baseball is dangerous this year because of the pitching they return. Junior T.J. Painter threw a one hitter against East Peoria, striking out eight and walking just one. He took the no-hit bid into the seventh and finally gave up a double with one out but still got the win.

Damian Pierce (Springfield High pitcher) The excitement coming into this season is around Damian Pierce’s bat and how many home runs he’ll likely hit. Turns out Damo is a threat on the mound as well. Pierce threw a two hit shutout against Lincoln, striking out ten Railsplitters in the win. At the dish, he went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in.

Brooklyn Blackwell (Pleasant Plains forward) The Cardinals have been crushing teams on the soccer field to start the season and we’ve definitely taken notice. Forward Brooklyn Blackwell had a total of nine goals in two games by herself last week. She scored five against Hillsboro and four against Auburn.

Tony Rolfe (Glenwood Track) Most track stars try to end their season on the top of the podium at Eastern. Tony Rolfe is trying to start and end it there. Rolfe won the 3A triple jump indoor state title and broke a school record on Saturday with a jump of 48’ 6.25”. That’s really, really far. He also finished fourth in the long jump and eighth in the 60 meter dash. Watch out for Rolfe this season.

Ozzy Erewele (Springfield High Track) We knew Ozzy was fast last season and it appears she’s picking up right where she left off this year. To start the year, Ozzy brought home first place from the 3A state tournament with a win in the 60 meter dash. Erewele won the title with a time of 7.56 for the Senators and we can’t wait to see her fly around the track this season.

Josh Cable (Rochester Track) Our Ten Question Tuesday victim this week is one of the best 800 meter runners in the country and he proved that with a win at the state indoor meet last Saturday. Josh Cable won the 2A 800 meter indoor title with a time of 1:58.36. Watch out for Josh the Savage on the track.
