Overtime Escape! Lanphier Keeps Season, State Tournament Hopes Alive In Regional Final Comeback Against Lincoln

Lanphier had seen this movie before, but they didn’t like the ending. So on Friday night, they rewrote the script. The Lions trailed Lincoln by double digits in the first half of Friday’s 3A regional final at Lober-Nika Gym, much like they had in a loss the the Railers at Roy S. Anderson just a few weeks ago. But a 16-2 run to close the half set the scene for an epic, overtime thriller that Lanphier won 49-44 in overtime.

Lincoln led 43-42 in the extra period before a Karl Wright put back with less than a minute to play gave the Lions the lead for good. Railer junior Ben Grunder had a deep look at a three in the final seconds with a chance to tie it, but his shot was deep and the Lions survived against their soon to be former CS8 rival.

Yaakema Rose scored a game high 16 points and Cardell McGee posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Granada led Lincoln with 14 points.

Lanphier advances to the 3A Effingham Sectional where they’ll play Champaign Central on Tuesday in a rematch of the Lanphier Thanksgiving Tournament final that the Lions won.
