Deron Powell Power Rankings: March 1

CS8

1. Lanphier – It’s officially March…which means the madness has arrived. Lanphier started their quest for 3A state with a rout of Rochester after winning the CS8 title outright on Friday in Chatham. They were clearly the best team in the conference this season and seem to have the pieces to make a run.

2. Southeast – Survive and Advance. Trey said after they escaped Taylorville with a win, that’s what happens this time of year. If there’s a team that’s built for that type of mentality, it’s the Spartans who have the seasoned veterans to go with the talented sophomores that make up a deep roster of guys.

3. Eisenhower – We’re not sure there’s a hotter team in the CS8 right now and the Panthers are poised to head to the Effingham sectional. Ike already beat MacArthur twice this season and they know they can beat Southeast because they beat them on their home floor. Stephon & Stefon are in win or go home mode and those two guys have been around for a few postseasons.

4. Lincoln – The final time the Railsplitters will appear in the Power Rankings sees them secure the four spot. This group of guys have shown the ability to play with the top teams but have also shown they struggle to score at times. We have no doubt they’ll be at the top of the Apollo conference next year, but can they beat Jacksonville and Lanphier this week to earn a regional title on their way out?

5. MacArthur – Talent wise, the Generals are right there with every team on this list. MacArthur has shown the ability to beat Lanphier but also has trouble with their crosstown rivals who they have to beat to get to Southeast on Friday. If the Brummetts can find their range on Dolph Stanley court, watch out for the Generals.

6. Jacksonville – We expected big things from the Crimsons with the addition of Cliff Cameron as the head coach and this team hasn’t exactly been able to put it all together. Brandon McCombs, Brady Hays and James White are a matchup nightmare in postseason play though and we wouldn’t be surprised if the Crimsons were right in the thick of things late in the fourth quarter on Friday.

7. Glenwood – The Titans have been near the bottom of the Power Rankings for most of the season, but the young guns gained valuable experience by getting thrown into the fire this year. They beat Springfield and stayed with Edwardsville for a half to close out their season, that’s a solid start.

8. Rochester – A late launch for the Rockets still allowed them to pick up a win over their rivals. Collin Stallworth got some help from some younger guys to keep his season alive for an extra day when Rochester beat SHG in the regional. Lanphier was just too much for the Rockets.

9. SHG – The Cyclones slipped up by losing to Rochester in the regional. Kyle Krager’s first season was quite the roller coaster, but grab your sunglasses Cyclone nation. The future is bright.

10. Springfield High – The repair job for Joby Crum is going to take a few years, everyone knew that. Starting a big group of sophomores this season gives the Solons some hope for the next few years.
